These are good lessons and I like that this book deals exclusively with coastal landscapes as I think they are challenging. The only thing I don't care for is the painters use of sky colors, but this is just a personal preference. Others might really enjoy sort of broody, dark skies.

Great intermediate techniques and approach. Very instructive.

Have been buying almost all David's art books. Love his style and technique. This book doesn't disappoint.

As a true fan of David Bellamy I must say that once again he has given us a book to be treasured. His "Coastal Landscapes: A Practical Guide to Painting Coastal Scenery" is a book that every serious watercolour artist should have in their collection. I highly recommend it.

I had borrowed the book from the library and decided that it would be a good book to have. Since my wife is an artist she very much likes the book.

The free preview made me think that I was really going to like this book and for the first third of it, I was having a good time. The character development for Charlie was really working and I found myself rooting for the scrappy young thief. The world-building was going well and I was looking forward to seeing what happened. Then everything went wrong.First, Charlie turned into a bad romance character rather than a good urban fantasy character. Despite being kidnapped and beaten, she decided that the man who was holding her was just so dreamy and couldn't stop thinking about how manly he was. This guy, who is being forced into the position of eventual love interest for no reason that I could perceive, kidnaps her, allows her to be attacked and nearly raped in order to gain her loyalty (yeah, still having problems with that), is cold toward her, and for some reason, all of this just makes him super-duper appealing to her.And then there was how when she was disguised as a boy, she was smart and persistent while trying to fight back and escape. Once she was "womanized," she became pretty much useless. She was either a hostage or kidnap-bait.All of the secondary characters were interesting, but it was hard to stay interested in them when I found myself disliking the two main characters so much. By the end of it, I found no reason why Charlie would stick around but knew that she would because they have to force into that rather disturbing romance.

Based on the free sample of this story, I was intrigued--a woman posing as a young boy in order to get buy, necromancy powers that she has never really explored, and people trying to track her down because of those powers for unknown reasons. I enjoyed the first third of the book, where we saw Charlie struggling to find a way to deal with her situation, but the romance really killed it for me, and a number of the twists later on in the story were predictable. The story presented opportunities for Charlie to develop meaningful and interesting relationships, not just in the romantic category but through friendships and working relationships with the other main characters, but only a few of these were actualized. Worse, the "romance" was both predictable and not appealing because of how much of a jerk the romantic interest was throughout the story. Despite the interspersed comments on Charlie's physical attraction to Fitzroy and his apparent protectiveness of Charlie, there's little substance to the quick development of their feelings for one another. Beyond that and avoiding any specific spoilers, Fitzroy was in starts manipulative, overprotective to the point of being stifling, patronizing, and hedging on abusive in the way he treats Charlie. I don't anticipate great literature in these reads and I recognize the appeal of maintaining mystery around the romantic interests, but I generally prefer relationships to be an overall positive thing that push the development of both characters in meaningful ways, and the romance in this story felt like the opposite of that for Charlie.Apart from the romance issue, Charlie has been an independent youth for years, and her sudden shift from seeking to protect her secrets and escape to being desperate to stay on at the Ministry in any capacity versus other options given her was uninspiring. Recognizing the gender limitations present in the portrayed Victorian-era society, the main character's devolution disappointed me. I will not be reading the rest of the series because I was disappointed in the overall execution, despite an interesting initial concept.

While the writing is decent and the story somewhat entertaining, the main character is a disappointment. As a homeless girl pretending to be a boy, the character shows bravery and ingenuity. However, when she gets a bath and is exposed as a girl, she reverts to some fearful, incompetent Victorian woman.

This was similar to Mairelon the Magican and Magician's Ward by Patricia Wrede, but seemed to lack the playfulness and fun of the older series. The main character here is a young lady who discovered that she could bring the dead back to life and ran away from a father who didn't understand. There are some attempts to add twists and surprises, but the romance was too obviously grafted onto the story and just didn't make sense in any form. The male love interest was far too cold and exacting to seem like someone a woman would become interested in. But then again, I hate the vampire romances that permeate the urban fantasy genre, and he could have fit there just fine in many ways.Good for lovers of this kind of tale, but I felt it lacked anything to make it special or new.

This book could have been so awesome and was until a street smart "boy" turned into a not too bright damsel in distress. It was annoying that she had to be rescued in every predicament she got into. I wish I could have enjoyed it instead rolling my eyes almost every chapter.Much better books: Rylee Adamson series or Elemental series - both by Shannon Mayer or Rachel Morgan series by Kim Harrison. I guarantee no damsels in distress.

But Charlie is an idiot who thinks she knows everything. Swears she is capable of taking care of herself but always needs rescuing.....completely irritating. She ruined the book for me.

This book had a lot of potential to be really good, but then it just falls flat. The character has some serious potential, but the second she gets captured she takes a turn downhill. Once, Charlie becomes clean she turns into a completely different character incapable of being independent.

I spent way too much time getting into this book just to be turned off by a scene where the main character is set up to get raped so that her kidnapper can rescue her...and she gets all swoonie over it. Another book about how a young strong intelligent woman is turned into a helpless hormonal heap of uselessness over a man who is rude, cold, and uncaring...and sets her up to be raped to teach her a lesson....

Small Fry, by Lisa Brennan-Jobs

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of September 2018: When you finish Lisa Brennan-Jobs’ memoir of growing up as the daughter of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, you’ll feel sorry for her – not just because Jobs was a jerk a lot of the time, but because some readers will be too busy rubbernecking at her famous dad to notice what a great writer his daughter is. In Small Fry, Brennan-Jobs moves back and forth in time, balancing her memories of Jobs' often tough treatment of her (denying paternity, denying her adequate financial support, denying her the warmth and attention every child deserves) with his unpredictable moments of openness and generosity. No wonder Brennan-Jobs is always nervous around her dad, breaking glasses, fluttering her hands: she’s lovesick, and uncertain that her love is requited. “My insides are jumping,” she writes in her high school diary after he unexpectedly seeks her out for time alone together. “When I tell him events, they come alive. When I don’t tell him, they don’t exist.” In the end, Jobs, so rich and so famous, is just another parent who withholds what his children need to thrive. “How can it look so good but feels so bad?” Brennan-Jobs says of living in his house. Her aunt, the writer Mona Simpson, answers, “What else is money for… if not to make it look good?” This artfully constructed, self-critical memoir feels like so much more than axe-grinding: what does look good is Brennan-Jobs’s future as a writer. —Sarah Harrison Smith, Amazon Book Review

Praise for Small FryA NEW YORK TIMES AND NEW YORKER TOP 10 BOOK OF THE YEAR A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR FOR NPR, AMAZON, GQ, VOGUE (UK), BUSTLE, PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, AND INDIGOA 35 UNDER 35 DEBUT AUTHOR“Entrancing... Brennan-Jobs is a deeply gifted writer… Her inner landscape is depicted in such exquisitely granular detail that it feels as if no one else could have possibly written it. Indeed, it has that defining aspect of a literary work: the stamp of a singular sensibility… Beautiful, literary, and devastating.”―New York Times Book Review“An intimate, richly drawn portrait… Small Fry is a memoir of uncommon grace, maturity, and spare elegance… The reader of this exquisite memoir is left with a loving, forgiving remembrance and the lasting impression of a resilient, kindhearted and wise woman who is at peace with her past.”―San Francisco Chronicle“Extraordinary… An aching, exquisitely told story of a young woman’s quest for belonging and love.”―People“Mesmerizing, discomfiting reading…A book of no small literary skill.”―New Yorker“This heartfelt, emotional and exceedingly well-written coming-of-age memoir is a warts-and-all portrait, laced with resilience and healing… Brennan-Jobs is an outstanding storyteller, and her empowering tale of overcoming dysfunctional family relationships with haunt readers.”―Shelf Awareness“It’s gratifying to see [Ms. Brennan-Jobs] assert her authority as the owner of her narrative. Writing with enlightened panache and dry humor, she’s as keen a witness to the ambience of the Bay Area in the 1980’s and 1990’s…as she is to the behavior of the adults around her…Never having felt safe in any of her father’s houses, [she] has built her own house in memoir form, a repository of her love and anger and mourning…It’s alive in all the rough edges of its feelings, and it’s home.”―Wall Street Journal“[Small Fry] is a story of a girl growing up in 1980s and ’90s California trying to fit into two very different families and not belonging in either. It’s the story of her single mother trying to keep it together and often not succeeding. It’s the story of a family that is as imperfect as every family, things complicated by wealth, fame and, in the end, illness and death."―Associated Press“Beautifully written and psychologically acute… [Brennan-Jobs] establishes herself as a truly talented writer, whose gift for description and structure equals her hard-won tolerance of human frailty.”―The Tablet (UK)“Revelatory… Her exquisitely written prose allows Brennan-Jobs to – painfully, complexly, heroically – reclaim her own story.”―Entertainment Weekly, “Best Books to Read in September”“The sleeper critical hit of the season.”―Vulture“Beautifully written… the currency of this book is love.”―The Times UK“A masterly Silicon Valley gothic… The bohemian landscape she captures will be virtually unrecognizable to anyone who equates this slice of Northern California with Teslas and tiger moms… Of the book’s myriad achievements, the greatest might be making [this] story her own.”―Vogue"An epic, sharp coming-of-age story from the daughter of Steve Jobs. It's rare to find a memoir from a celebrity's child in which the writing is equal to―or exceeds―the parent's reputation, but that is the case with Brennan-Jobs' debut. In a lesser writer's hands, the narrative could have devolved into literary revenge. Instead, Brennan-Jobs offers a stunningly beautiful study of parenting that just so happens to include the co-founder of Apple… An exquisitely rendered story of family, love, and identity."―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"Brennan-Jobs’s narrative is tinged with awe, yearning, and disappointment… Bringing the reader into the heart of the child who admired Jobs’s genius, craved his love, and feared his unpredictability."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)"Brennan-Jobs skillfully relays her past without judgement... staying true to her younger self. It is a testament to her fine writing and journalistic approach that her memoir never turns maudlin or gossipy. Rather than a celebrity biography, this is Brennan-Jobs's authentic story of growing up in two very different environments, neither of which felt quite like home.”―Booklist (starred review)“Here is a literary coming-of-age memoir of the highest order, the story of a child trying to find her place between two radically different parents, identities, and worlds. Compassionate, wise, and filled with finely-wrought detail, Small Fry is a wonder of a book, and Lisa Brennan-Jobs is a wonder of a writer.”―Jamie Quatro“As clear-eyed, amusing, honest, unsentimental and sad as any memoir I’ve read in years. The prose sparkles, the vision behind it is ruefully compassionate and wise. No other book or film has captured Steve Jobs as distinctly as this one has. The love between father and daughter, thwarted and baffled as it often is, comes through beautifully.”―Phillip Lopate“A gorgeous, compelling work of art and a dazzling coming-of-age story. This is a lovely, sweetly intimate portrait, a story told through the eyes of a daughter whose father struggled with his own origins―and who almost became the father she hoped he would be.” â€•Susan Cheever

#5,893 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is a book that is entertaining as it is hard to read. Sad to say but I was raised by a sociopath and I feel that I had a better child hood than the author did. This book will bring a tear to your eye and well as a few laughs. One of the most heart rending stories is when Steve Jobs finally brings home a NeXT computer for Lisa to have. (She had been wanting one for about a year.) Only to find out that is does not work and he eventually removes it from her room. Let’s face it the guy had a genius for design but he was also a sadist. No doubt about the last one. The book mentions how Stevie baby took the whole family to Hawaii and while enjoying the climate of such a beautiful place he took time out to basically torture a parrot. He was teasing it with food trying to determine if it would learn the lesson not to lean for the food when he dangled it in front of the bird. (Can you imagine how many human beings he performed this exact exercise on in this life time.)Sooo thanks for making the effort to write this book. My parents moved up several notches by the time that I finished reading this master work. (I never thought that would happen.) The most important point of this story to me is….a beautiful lady was able to weather the storm of bad parenting (both by the way) and basically willed herself into Harvard. Ms. Brennan-Jobs you are a survivor and also an inspiration.

It is amazing how much Lisa Brennan Jobs reminds me of the protagonist in "Educated," both overcame massive hurdles, parental indifference, cruelty and outright obstruction to get an education and have successful lives. It also interests me that Steve Job's wife and sister commented on the book that it "wasn't the Steve they remembered." Of course it wasn't, he treated them well. They don't, however, say she was wrong as to how she was treated. They remind me of when Child Protective Services interviews the two children sitting and eating at the dinner table as to what kind of parents they have. Their description of their parents will be way different from the third child's--the one outside chained to the dog house and eating scraps out of a dog bowl. Can you imagine the scathing parental conversations about Lisa her half-sister must have overheard if she could so casually describe Lisa to a group of her friends as "Daddy's mistake?" Hats off to Lisa Brennan Jobs, you didn't have the childhood you deserved, but you certainly have made something of yourself!

Living in Palo Alto in the 1980s, we often heard rumors that Steve had a daughter named Lisa for whom the computer was named. No one seemed to know whether this was a true story or an urban legend, and certainly none of us realized that Lisa and her mom lived among us -- going out for dinner to the Good Earth, shopping at Units, cruising down University Avenue. Meanwhile, especially after Steve and Laurene married and more kids came along, we often ran into them: getting dessert at Gelato Classico, buying gifts at Palo Alto Toy & Sport, even roller skating along Homer near Whole Foods. Whatever else we thought about Steve, he seemed like a devoted dad.Except he wasn't.Lots of people are raised by substandard parents. You don't get to choose your mom and dad. For many of us, recovery can take decades or maybe even never. But Lisa, to her unending credit, is able to tell a story that radiates affection despite describing neglect that borders on abuse. She walks us through her childhood and teen years with unstinting candor, including a number of anecdotes that highlight her own missteps. The most affecting scenes are the mother-daughter stories. Chris doesn't seem like a candidate for Mom of the Year, as she leaves Lisa by herself as a young child, brings home a series of boyfriends, moves from house to house, and often loses her temper. But because we see her through Lisa's eyes, our takeaway is the shared adoration between mother and child, and we understand that for all her foibles, Chris fought to give her daughter the best possible life. And in many ways her efforts were stymied rather than supported by the fact that Steve overshadowed their lives, even during the years that he remained detached from them.Lisa is an artist, and her writing is the verbal equivalent of a painting, every detail sharply rendered. For that reason alone, this book is worth a reader's attention. Years ago I read an autobiography written by a poet whose narrative resonated like a poem; Small Fry hits that same note and sustains it. If not for her famous father, her book probably would never have been published, and that would have been a loss to all of us.

I’m a year younger than the author, so her colorful writing evokes a lot of nostalgia.I think there’s much risk in writing a book like this. It could be interpreted as X, Y, or Z because of Steve Jobs. But, this book is a fantastic execution of a difficult task, and the story is uniquely the author’s own. It’s quite interesting to read the account of a person in her circumstances, and to see the world through the eyes of a child in California during the 80’s.This book is a pleasure to read. Really enjoying this.

From the Back Cover

The SEC. The Masters. The Olympics. March Madness. The Dallas Cowboys. Yes sir, Uncle Verne has seen it all.Over the last fifty years, few voices have epitomized the sound of sports television quite like that of Verne Lundquist’s. A fixture on air since the 1960s—first broadcasting University of Texas baseball and Dallas Cowboys football games on radio before eventually joining the legendary CBS Sports team—Verne has covered just about every sport there is, and in the process he’s made some of the most enduring calls in the history of golf, football, figure skating—and everything in between. In Play by Play, Verne goes inside those calls and his remarkable career, telling the behind-the-scenes story of how he ended up with the best seats in the house, giving voice to history time and time again. From Christian Laettner’s buzzer-beater in the 1992 NCAA tournament, to the saga of Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding at the 1994 Olympics, to the shocking finish of the Iron Bowl in 2013, to Jack Nicklaus’s and Tiger Woods’s unforgettable victories at the Masters, Verne’s five decades as a sportscaster routinely put him in the midst of greatness. With his trademark humility and his goal to make the athlete the legend, instead of the call itself, Verne details his view of the plays that have captured our collective imagination for two generations, featuring an incredible cast of characters that includes names like Terry Bradshaw, Pat Summerall, John Madden, Scott Hamilton, and Tom Landry. What emerges is an invigorating portrait of the games that matter most, in life and on the field. A moving recollection of the moments that make sports worth watching, Play by Play reminds us all that sports are about more than games played—they’re about the history that we share together and the voices that we remember long after the final whistle has blown.

A must read for any sports fan or anyone interested in a behind the scenes look at sports broadcasting. "Uncle Verne relates his viewpoint of some of the most memorable sporting events of the past 50 years with the same comfortable style that made him a fixture on countless Saturday and Sunday afternoons. This book is a great reminder of the power of sports and the that bind us through shared experiences and memories. This message is delivered beautifully in the final as Verne recalls his experiences with the annual Army-Navy game. Sports are an important part of our lives, but Verne continually reminds us that the real story is often the human element behind the final outcome. Thank you Verne for sharing and for being such a generous guest in our homes during your career.

A well written book by a consummate broadcaster. I found my self reading a chapter at a time as I often reflected on the events Verne was describing. I often found myself going, "He did call that!" Unlike his broadcasts where he lets the action speak for itself, Verne goes into great detail on the production side of the broadcast with numerous shout outs to the unseen people in the truck and those behind the scenes. His story about how he came into broadcasting figure skating is worth the time.Little or no ego, no sordid details, just a few good evenings with Uncle Verne. Not too shabby for that guy from "Bowling for Dollars."

This book will be enjoyed by a sports fan who has watched CBS Sports in recent years and knows who Vern Lundquist is. He teams with Gary Danielson on CBS' coverage of SEC football in the fall. The book drags in spots, and I wish there had been more coverage of his years doing SEC football.

Enjoyed his broadcasting career.Vern’s book is very interesting.

Great read!

I’ve had a ton of respect for Verne Lundquist over the years. As a fellow broadcaster myself, I can relate to several of his stories.

Verne Lindquist does a great job telling the sports fan what goes on behind the scenes. Verne's stories were interesting at at times laugh out loud funny.

I wasn't expecting anything too exciting from a children's mad-libs book. I bought this for my husband as a cute Valentine's gift and we've completed several of them together. We get a good innocent laugh out of the stories. If you're up for something more romantic, they make other mad-libs books that are more risqué.

Coming from the generation of Mad Libs, my husband and I had a great time with this on our first night away from our kids! Wine and Mad Libs, yaaaassssss!

Lots of laughs between my husband and I!I like how the front of the book has a refresher so you know what nouns are verbs are and what not

My son loves Mad Libs, so I bought this for him for Valentine's Day. He loves them!

I bought these for me and my fiance for Christmas, we haven't filled them out yet, but they look like fun. I used these when i was a kid. Kind of like playing MASH

I bought this as part of my valentines gift. It came and the front cover is all bent and creased. I will be returning

My 10 year old granddaughter had fun with this for Valentine's day, reinforces vocabulary use!

FUN! We celebrate Valentine's Day with my daughters and this was a fun activity.

From the Inside Flap

"This excellent book is based on abundant archival materials and Emily Wilcox's practiced knowledge of dance. Its dramatic biographical data, clear conceptual design, and close readings of choreographic works make for engaging reading and engaged scholarship. An important contribution."—Rebecca Karl, Professor of History, New York University"Tracing the rise of Chinese dance in the turbulent times of twentieth-century China, Wilcox has offered a brilliant account of the mutation of diverse dance forms. A productive blend of choreography, ethnography, performance, and cultural studies, this book not only fills the gaps in dance studies, but also addresses broad issues of interaction between China and the West, ancient forms and socialist agenda, and regional traditions and national culture."—Ban Wang, William Haas Professor in Chinese Studies, Stanford University

Overall gross stats book for introducing sas. Very carefully explains how to use sas and the different features with each coding.Used this in an intro course on statistical packages. I will continue to use this book whenever I go back to use. Mostly and r user now, but sas is my close second favorite software. This book covers most of what I need, including some of the higher multivariate work.

This book is terrific. My job uses SAS quite often, and you always tend to forget things from time to time. This book makes for great references, and I use it regularly at work for reference material!

Great book for your first experience with SAS! This is the missing tutorial guide. For getting comfortable with SAS, I would recommend this book _instead_ of Learning SAS in the Computer Lab _or_ the Base SAS 9 Certification guide because--you will learn all of the simple but mysterious things, like how to open/use a permanent SAS dataset and view its contents (variable names, number of observations, etc.)AS WELL AS--the basics of the data step, creating reports, creating macros, and using the ODSAND--each section is concise and easy to read (only 2 pages long)AND--each section has an example--data and sample program--you can test out and fiddle with (Base SAS 9 Cert. Guide does not)It scores very high on all of the standard criteria for any book: well-written, images clean and readable, good typesetting, well organized. You can tell those involved in making this book have spent a lot of time putting it together and improving it, over many years.Programmers like myself will still feel like this book is only a first step. The other two books I mentioned have their merits. Learning SAS in the Computer Lab goes into more detail about statistical procedures. The Little SAS Book only has one chapter on statistics, yet this chapter is packed with information, and it even covers things like PROC SGPLOT that Learning SAS in the Comp Lab does not.

I bought this book for a SAS class at school. For quick references this book is useful since it has a nice index portion where you can look up the various SAS statements. The general format is a short paragraph on the purpose of the statement, the general format to type, and 1-3 SAS output examples with a bit of explanation. However, I found that this book could go into more depth on different types of examples and more complex applicable sub-statements (or perhaps have a different arrangement of the book layout so that related subjects are next to each other). Considering that it is a "little" primer though, I can't complain too much and it does provide a good introduction to using SAS.

For those starting out using SAS, this is a good book that goes over the basics of data management and some analysis codes. It's not anything that you can't google but it's nice to have the basics in one small book that you can just look in the appendix for the appropriate topic/code. However, sometimes I could have used a little more examples for some topics because even though they list out the options available for a function, sometimes I wanted to see how the different options could be used within the code. The chapters are easily navigated to find what you need when you need it, you don't have sit and read front to back by any means...but what stats book does anyone do that for anyways (but maybe I'm doing it all wrong)....

The book comes in handy when studying for the SAS Base Exam. Its easy to read and provides real world scenarios which combine various topics into the same database project.

I used SAS as a student over 25 years ago, and then once every year or so since then for some simple analysis. I was struggling most with understanding the concepts of libraries, infiles, outfiles, etc., especially the methods for reading and writing directly from Access and Excel files. Have now read through this entire book and made several test programs. Book was easy to ready and very informative. Of course, it does not give all of the options and other choices of basic data processing, nor does it go beyond very basic statistical proedures. But it is very good for teaching a person how to read in the data, manipulate the data, and output data or results.

Overall the book does teach the basic concepts of SAS for beginners. It would be more effective if it provided more examples and examples that make sense or are practical in 'real life'.
