Nothing new and nothing particularly well said. Lightman strings together a heap of disjointed information, without much effort. This is 0% original knowledge, and moreover barely scrapes the surface of what can be known about personality or “analyzing people”.Much of the “insights” here are obvious concepts of which an intuitive knowledge is required to be a well-adjusted adult. For example, that you should read between the lines of what people say (he does not go any deeper than that basic, surface level). Yeah, I kind of knew that already.I bet Lightman wants to be an author primarily to boost his consulting/coaching hustle.

It was very interesting to find out what types of personality exist. There is a detailed description of each person is so individual. I absolutely agree that the basic idea of what the other person is telling us is hidden, therefore, it is very important for everyone to study body language. It's great to be able to analyze and understand people.

Wow this book is very insightful. It helps to view people in a different light. For instance “ I Made up my Mind” if an individual says he or she has made up their mind, they have most likely considered several options before making a clear decision. It implies that a person is prone to contemplating and reflecting upon their decision rather than making spur of the moment decisions.

This book is a very powerful tool to read a person. Very excellent book! If you want to know how to Analyze people this book is definitely for you.i really like this book.

Most of what he had to say was kind of like, "of course," or a "duh, now can we get to the point," type of thing. I was pretty disappointed since the reviews were overall positive.

I work for a company who supplied this book for reading doing downtime and I must say, "It has completely helped me understand me a little better." I made a lot of notes that I will be going back to look over and put into practice. It talked about the Briggs-Myers Personality Indicator which helps you to determine which one of the 16 personality traits you have. I took the test and found out that I am a "Protagonist." My personality indicator according to the Brigg-Myers Personality Indicator is ENFJ-A. It means that as this type I have well-developed people skills and I am known to be empathetic, kind, disciplined, and affectionate, which surprisingly is exactly the kind of person I am. I love people and do not meet a stranger anywhere I go. Again great read! If you want to know how to best deal with people then read this book!

Excellent quick read - wish there was more in depth information. Maybe more role play scenarios to help understand reading people

A good guidebook if you want analyze and read a people. This book discussed almost everything that you need to know. By this book, I came to know how to analysis a person upon on his behavior, personality and body language. Really, it's a great stuff.

#50,554 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

"Pictures of the Gone World" had not been so fully praised as Ferlinghetti's next book of poems, "A Coney Island of the Mind". The only reason I can come up with is the extensive use of surrealist imagery and references to other poets, painters, sculptors etc., that the poems are full with. But in "Coney Island" there is a similar creative procedure--even the line order is "floating", as in "Pictures", so why is this book less known than "Coney Island"? It is probably not a matter of quality; probably more people feel attracted to read a book about Coney Island than one with a title which at first sight doesn't seem to say too much about its content. The poems incuded in "Pictures" are nevertheless great. This collection of verse is probably one of the most representative works during the Beat generation, along with Ginsberg's "Howl and other poems" (also published in City Lights Books) and Kerouac's "On the Road". Ferlinghetti succesfully intertwines surrealistic and dadaistic tendencies with oral speech, complex verbalization processes such as ekphrasis, which show the poet's skills at his best. This second edition brings us 18 new poems, which every Beat fan must get. Some of these new poems are quite remarkable, such as "Surfers are poets too", and there are some "addenda" to the previous ones. For example, no. 6 includes a whole new stanza, and words in no. 1 have been changed. This 1995 edition is also a collector's item, for it was published to celebrate 40 years of City Lights publishing.

Ferlinghetti was my introduction to Beat poetry, and an excellent one at that. I highly recommend this book. Personally, however, I prefer the original 1955 version with the poems in their original order (it can also be found separately on Amazon). To each their own.

Here we have it: the first book in the mostly-OOP Pocket Poets series by Ferlinghetti's SF-based City Lights publishing house, and Ferlinghetti's own first book of poems, arguably just as good as A Coney Island of the Mind (which, actually, can be said of almost all Ferlinghetti's books of poetry. High class, all over the place). Ferlinghetti, Whitman's 20th-century successor, the "new" poet for the common man (and woman!), and an adorable old guy (still kickin' at 89! still readin' and writin' pomes), semi-member of the Beat scene, definite member of the SF Renaissance, gives us 27 (or 45 if you picked it up after '95) of his precious, wise-for-his-age (born: 1919; published: 1955) free-verse observations. This 'nik is famous for his cut up style, a style that adds to the intended jazziness of the lines, all intended to be spoken out loud. A favorite of mine, only available here (a number are reprinted in his more famous Coney Island) deals with vanity: number #17, or "London," and goes like this (keep in mind, I can't accurately copy the structure of the poem here, severely--no! slightly!--detracting from the poem's inner jazz):Londoncrossfiguredcreeping with tramsand the artists on sundaysin the summerall 'tracking Nature'in the suburbsItcould have been anyplacebut it wasn'tIt wasLondonand when someone shouted overthat they had got a modelI ran out across the courtbut thenwhen the model started taking offher clothesthere was nothing underneathI mean to sayshe took off her shoesand found no feettook off her topand found no titunder itand I must she did looka bitASTOUNDEDjust standing therelooking downat where her legs werenotBut so very carefully thenshe put her clothes back onand as soon as she was dressed againcompletelyshe was completelyall rightDo it again! cried someonerushing for his easelBut she was afraid toand gave up modellingand forever afterslept in her clothesOh yeah. You love it. This and "See/it was like this" (or #9) from Coney Isle. are what got me into Ferlinghetti (and with a little help from Whitman, into poetry!), as well as a few friends. Just memorize those two suckers (and maybe #25, "The world is a beautiful place") and you'll have all the cats swooning.90%Highly recommended. Also recommended is going to Google images, and running two or three searches for pictures of Ferlinghetti so you can to stare in wonder at his jolly-faced glory.

Great book!

I really enjoy Ferlinghetti's poetry. It's interesting, colorful, and evocative without resorting to tasteless sexual references . This little book is a classic. I hope it will always be in print.

I never tire of Lawrence Ferlinghetti. The additional new poems are a great plus.

I am embarassed to say that I picked this book up on my last visit to City Lights (several years ago) but I never actually read it. Other than for a piece or two in an anthology, I had never read Ferlinghetti, period. Having enjoyed the hospitality of the upstairs poetry room, that seemed somehow ill-mannered of me.Simply put, I liked this collection. The images and meanings are more subtle than a lot of poets with Beat roots. He can really paint a word picture to put you in the scene. You instantly soak up the nuances of the whole. Then maybe he'll nudge you, ever so slightly, into seeing the absurdity in it. Or perhaps he'll interject a reminder of your own mortality in a simular subtle way. It is appropriate that one of the poems deals with Edward Hopper. I get that Hopperesque quality of an observer in an existential urban landscape with much of the collection. About the only difference that I detected from the first 27 poems (written by 1955) and the 18 new ones (new in 1995) is a difference in rhythm. The older poems have much more of that classic coffee house beat- at least in my head. Of yes, he also uses the term "cyberpunk" in one of them.... But the word painting, and sense of subtle absurdity, is still right on the money.

"An inspiring, hilarious memoir" - BookBub"I have never felt so strongly that I was on a journey I wasn't actually on. I felt the exhaustion and camaraderie along the way, sharing each day's challenges and pleasures. I saw the rainforest at the lowest elevation and the "bleak but sunlit alpine desert" as they climbed higher; I always felt the terrain beneath my feet... A funny, wry, and moving account..." - Bacon on the Bookshelf"Over the past year of preparing for my trip, I've read countless Kilimanjaro articles, blog posts, books, etc. And by far, yours has been the best." - Bryan Alsop, prospective Kili trekker"Rich in humor and a hefty dollop of humanity." - San Francisco Review of Books"An interesting, educative and fun filled narrative replete with adventure." - Readers' Favorite Book Reviews

From the Author

The question I most often get asked about my book, Kilimanjaro Diaries, is how long it took to write it.It's not so easy to answer, because I started out with a collection of blog posts I'd composed right after climbing Kili. But once I sat down almost a year later and started writing seriously, from the very first rough outline to the final edit, it took about seven months. The key to writing a book, above all else, is to keep going. It takes a lot of effort to actually sit down and start writing. There is always something else that needs doing, and the longer you wait, the more your book recedes into the background, yielding ground to more pressing needs like laundry, groceries, and lately, the kids' university applications. If you sit down to write every single morning, on the other hand, even if it's just for half an hour a day, the book stays fresh on your mind and continues to progress at a steady clip. And the more you write, the better the words flow. Here's to the next one and that it may only take three months. Stay tuned for an unforgettable road trip through the Namibian wilderness.

Amusing in places, moderately informative, and mildly inspirational. And that is the extent of my positive appraisal.Ms Thieme strikes me as a fickle woman who is easily distracted. Her Kili diary is filled with ramblings about what happened one Christmas, or during holidays somewhere else, or her many moves from country to country, or her laborious role as an overworked mother. I admit I had to skip through these sections in search of Kilimanjaro material. Her motive and attitude for climbing the mountain left me rolling my eyes and shaking my head. For example, she agreed to join a gang of acquaintances during a pub binge, immediately bought a pair of walking boots that she broke in by wearing while she sat at her computer, and couldn't understand the need of even moderate physical training. She let others arrange the trip, not even knowing which route they would be taking up the mountain until they arrived at the gate. Her main concern while on the mountain was the lack of modern sanitary facilities, litter, and keeping her toes warm. Her greatest memories were all the coarse jokes and camaraderie with her friends, and all the childlike nicknames she gave everyone. Some woman may read this book and be glued to every word. Many men, I predict, will yawn and sling it aside. However, I will congratulate Ms Thieme on reaching the summit with relative ease. Who knows, maybe she has the right attitude after all.

I grew up not far from Kilimanjaro in Arusha, Tanzania. A few years ago I began to dream of returning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro with my sons (my daughters think I'm crazy). I picked up this memoir thinking it would help me be more realistic about my dream. After all, I am over 50 and not in the best of shape. The result has been to make me even more determined to find a way to go. This is a delightful mix of humor and information. Thieme gives all sorts of helpful tips about packing for the trip; what was helpful, and what was not. She has a lovely appreciation both for her traveling companions and for the porters and guides who worked so hard to make the journey a success. I think I will have to buy copies to send to all my sons so that I can keep the dream alive!

This book probably took me three times longer to read than it should have, because I kept flicking over to Google to check out everything from the history if Kilimanjaro explorers to videos on how to make South African rusks! To me, wanting to search further is a sign of an engaging book. The author has a fluent writing style that makes you feel as though you are sitting down chatting with her. I laughed so many times, particularly with a vision in my mind of the difficulties of using a long drop loo on a mountain in the middle of the night and having to queue to do so. I felt her bittersweet experience of finally summiting. This is a terrific book and I thoroughly recommend it.

I enjoyed this book of a mother and sons bonding mission to climb Kilimanjaro in East Africa. It is a light hearted read of the mothers (and son's!) ups and downs, pun intended, on Africa's highest mountain. The story is full of information of what to take and not to take for the stiff walk and what your body could or would react to. But the story is more than just a travelogue - it also tells the story of family relations as well as participating with complete strangers at very close quarters and interracial team work. A warming read, I enjoyed the endeavour from the comfort of my armchair!

I liked this book. It made me start researching climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. However, there are spots of the book I totally skipped. The author says she is indecisive and she talks every decision to death. Maybe she thought this was funny but I found it annoying. The story of the actual climb was interesting. I'm not sure how many books this author has written but she needs a editor who will cut out the annoying parts of the book.

This delightful book was kind of a cross between "A Walk in the Woods" and "Wild." Thieme has a fun sense of humor which she balances nicely with her personal "lessons learned" from her experience of planning for and participating in a climb of Kili. While some might prefer that the author choose between offering a sort of guidebook to the climb vs. her own personal reflections, the mixture of both elements was entertaining and educational. I don't plan on climbing Kili myself, but I'd say that this memoir would be a good addition to the readings of anyone planning this particular adventure.

I really enjoyed Kilimanjaro Diaries. What a trek up that mountain with her teenage son, a few friends, strangers, guides and toilet porters. It is the first travel memoir about Kilimanjaro I have read and it was everything I hoped it would be. Packed with plenty of information, humor and what it takes to get up Mount Kilimanjaro. High on my top favorite reads!

This was such an enjoyable book, on so many levels. I wanted to read something humorous, and it was definitely funny, but it was also informative and endearing. I especially loved reading about the wonderful guides and porters. They were professional, caring people and seemed to make the experience more than just a "hike up a mountain". I recommend this read to all mothers, and not just those interested in Hiking up Kili.
