Bylaws: Writing Amending Revising

From the Publisher

The bylaws, sometimes called constitution and bylaws, is the governing document of the organization. The bylaws specify how the organization will be managed, who shall be the members and how they shall be chosen. This document describes the purpose of the organization and how various matters shall be handled. The constitution is a separate document, many of the rules will be contained in it, and it takes precedence of the bylaws. However, more and more organizations are choosing to combine these two documents into one, called the bylaws. Usually, there is very little reason to have separate documents. Some organizations call the articles of incorporation the charter, and some call the constitution the charter. Usually, however, the charter is a document distributed by a parent organization to a subordinate unit, such as a local or state chapter, giving authority to exist under the name of the parent organization. It is important to distinguish between the different types of documents because the statutes and other rules will govern their content. If some state statutes define the articles of incorporation as the 'corporate charter', then that is the term that should be used to describe them. The articles of incorporation should contain only as much information as the statutes require. The main organizational rules should be contained in the bylaws. Some organizations with existing bylaws have great difficulty in understanding the original intent of many provisions and find them to be a hindrance to the work of the organization. If amending them proves to be too difficult, many just give up and try to live with them, usually ignoring them. Occasionally, a parliamentarian consulting for an organization will find that bylaws are nonexistent, or have been missing for many years, or no one has a copy to use for guidance. In these cases, I recommend a revision so that a new document can be devised to reflect the current use of rules and customs of the organization. In this book, we will start with the basic bylaws articles and describe each one, with explanations of the various ways each can be written. Then, we will discuss additional articles to meet individual organizational needs. We will provide an explanation of the amending process, how a revision works, how a bylaws committee goes about its work, and finally we will provide scripts for the procedures. The information in this publication is directed to nonprofit voluntary organizations. Organizations which require the help of an attorney to write their bylaws include nonprofit organizations with very large purses, those providing personal or social services which could lead to legal difficulties, condominium and homeowner associations which are governed by strict state statutes, and business organizations. However, regardless of what type of organization you have, this book will help you to understand the process better, so that you can work with the attorney more knowledgeably. Amending bylaws is not difficult if one has an explanation of process at hand. If the bylaws are too complicated, ambiguous, or reflect procedures no longer used, a revision might be in order. This publication will help to do both without undue difficulty. A special section on starting a new organization is included for those who have requested the information from the author. We will attempt to answer the questions most often asked of parliamentarians regarding governing documents. The glossary will be helpful in finding words that are unfamiliar.

If you are a beginning theological student, you must own and read this book. I teach an Introduction to Theological Research course at an evangelical Seminary in the United States and this book will be assigned to my students beginning in the Fall semester of 2016. Kibbe offers a clear, concise guide to theological research that will help students understand the expectations of theological faculty. Especially helpful is the chapter on identifying and using sources. The excursus on mistakes that students make in using research sources is worth the price of the book. Also note the appendix on navigating the ATLA Religion Database, one of the most essential resources for theological research.

The author recommends going through his book as you work through a research project. I read it straight first, and can only imagine it's increased benefit as a resource alongside an actual project timeline. Excellent advice, well written. I feel like I've been visiting with a trusted mentor, and walked away encouraged and confident to tackle a project. It's a short book, but it is clear and concise in ways that are truly helpful.

This book is on point. This book should be kept close by for those who are writing academic papers. Well done!

PhD program professor library resource request

I thought this was going to be one of those super boring books that you're professor makes you read because he has to but this book was SUPER helpful and entertaining. If you're new to theological writing or just need a brush up this is a great book.

Concise and easy to read. Thanks for the helpful Zotero tips! I wish I would have known about this in undergrad...

great guide without sounding like a teacher.

Clear direction, and useful information.

Review

"Whip up a Christmas plum pudding and settle in for season 3." --People Magazine "American fans have to wait until January to return to the lives of the fascinating upstairs and downstairs residents. To hold yourself over, try some of these delicious dishes before returning to the big house." --The Today Show Bites Blog "Add a bit of sophistication and style to your Downton Abbey watching parties in the months to come. The great thing about the book is that it is not only laid out by meal course from Hor D'Oeuvres to the Finishing Touches of Sweets and Desserts, there are also some bits and bobs that will help you prepare Afternoon Tea, course pairings, tips for table seatings and etiquette guidelines." --Tellyspotting.org "Downton Abbey fans in America may be feeling hard up for some period drama, and the knowledge that we won't get to watch season 3 until January 2013 has us scheming up ways to get our fix. There's one other way to consume some Downton Abbey drama: by cooking it. That's right, The Unofficial Downton Abbey Cookbook is on the way, by Emily Ansara Baines, who also gifted us with The Unofficial Hunger Games Cookbook. Helpfully, she includes conversion tables for metric measurements, baking pan sizes and temperatures - these alone are worth the $21.95 cover price. Downton Abbey fans, get cooking!" --Wall Street Journal "Not only is the cookbook a fascinating look at the British television series itself, it's a great historical look at the types of foods that were eaten by British royalty in the early 1900s. If you're a fan of Downton Abbey British television series or British cooking, you definitely need to buy The Unofficial Downton Abbey Cookbook." --Blog Critics "Fans of Downton Abbey, you have to reasons to rejoice! Your long wait for the start of Downton Abbey, Season 3 in the United States is mitigated by the publication of Emily Ansara Baines' The Unofficial Downton Abbey Cookbook. Peruse through its pages and you'll find period dishes from the Victorian and Edwardian eras. For the Downtown Abbey fan whose growing anticipation for Season 3 needs an outlet, this cookbook would make for the perfect gift." --Epicurious.com "It's filled with classic English recipes inspired by the show, tidbits about the denizens of Downton and tons of asides guaranteed to make a true fan smile and nod knowingly. Possibly the best part about the cookbook? It showcases the upstairs and the downstairs, just like the show. Even if you're not a Downton Abbey fan, this is a great general English cookbook to have on the shelf. If you are a Downton fan, it's probably a must buy - or an easy holiday gift for a fellow fan." --Chicagoist "When Downton Abbey brings its third season to America...expect sparks to fly at tea. Fans of the show will enjoy the name dropping and references...from Mrs. Patmore's Dropped Roasted Chicken to the Upstairs Anchovy-Onion Tarts. Bubble and squeak's there; so are Lancashire hot pot and Bakewell tarts. The author peppered the book with 'Times Gone By' and 'Etiquette Lessons' sidebars." --Chicago Tribune "Filled with classic English recipes inspired by the series, tidbits about the denizens of Downton Abbey, and plenty of asides guaranteed to make a true fan smile and nod knowingly." --Daily Herald Tribune "Baines seems to have done a fair amount of research on the dining habits of Edwardian England. For fans of the program this book provides a good collection of recipes for re-creating a meal that those upstairs or downstairs at real English estates might have had." --The Advocate

Giving it 2 stars because it's not TERRIBLE but it's certainly not great.I am a HUGE fan of the show and this season I decided to cook along each week.I have done a little "Downton Abbey Dinners" project and have had some fun.I wanted so much to love this book and for a few months while it was sitting on the coffee table as I waited for the January premier, I didn't really notice the errors in the recipes. Once I started cooking I noticed that the recipes are poorly written, serving sizes are off and in some cases the recipes are word for word what I have found to be available online. I don't mean mostly the same, I mean WORD FOR WORD the same. Most of the recipes that I have tried have been pretty good BUT many are missing steps. The steps missing would leave someone relying on the cookbook thinking "Now what?" and then thinking they had done something wrong when the dish didn't turn out properly. I have been able to move on and know what to do but I've said out loud "Um, there are a few steps missing here".I have also noticed that the serving sizes are WAY off in some of the recipes. Last week I made an appetizer soup and the recipes said "Serves 4". Ummmm yeah... no.The 4 people being served this appetizer would need to be "Jack & The Beanstalk" sized giants. The soup was good but only serves 4 if you're planning on it being a main dish for 2 days. (it's VERY rich and for my palate needed salt and pepper)Some recipes are so simple and have worked really well but you will have to think about some of the measurements, because they just don't make sense, and adjust a bit. Of course I made my own personal adjustments but I think most that cook do that.I write a cooking blog and had planned to give a copy of the book so some blog followers but I just can't. There are too many errors for me to stand behind it.

I enjoyed the commentary with each recipe. I LOVED the tie ins to the show. (Mrs. Pattmores Dropped Chicken) It showed that the author at least was familiar with the series...II know it is an UN-Official version happy to see dishes like Kegeree, Lancashire Hot Pot & Bubble & Squeek but I was still a little disappointed that the recipes weren't more 'period', for instance: Oysters Rockefeller: ( I am aware that the Antoine's chef who created it supposedly went to his grave with the orig. ingredients used BUT to include 'monterey jack' in the books recipe...really...(?!) I highly doubt THAT particular cheese (made by 19th c Mexican Franciscan friars of Monterey, California) would've ever set foot in Mrs. Pattmores kitchen!I am planning on making the Sally Lunn bread ( which I've actually tried once AT Sally Lunns - IN Bath England - so I'm def hoping that recipe is faithful to the orig! All in all a very nice, well thought out cookbook for fans, of which I am one!

There are a few small errors here and there, and of course no pictures, but overall it's a fun cookbook to add to your collection. It's separated by type of dish - appetizer, entree, etc - and has a lot of recipes to choose from (a lot more than I was expecting, actually). Even if you're not a Downton Abbey fan I would recommend this book if you want to try something new and do some traditional English cooking.

Nice book. Would have preferred recipes have their "proper" names, not renamed for characters on the show. Most recipes are available online but nice to have in one place. With of you are a fan of the show.

With this unofficial cookbook you will be able to reproduce many of the foods eaten both upstairs and downstairs at the fictional Downton Abbey. That means the recipes vary from luxurious dishes eaten at upstairs dinner parties to the more homely cooking eaten by the staff below stairs. If this whets your appetite for English cookery, you can move on to the genuine classic, Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management, which has been the foundation rock of English cooking for the last 150 years!

I love this cookbook! I have bought several copies as gifts as well. Have made several recipes from the book. Even if you are not a Downton Abbey fan, I think you would like the cookbook.

RATING...because it gives us a view of what cookery was like then...and the recipes are useable today...and many look downright delicious...I also have an original Fanny Farmer cookbook from the 1800's...and I've made many of those recipes too. Everything today is "hurry up" and make it with all kinds of shortcuts that these two fore mentioned books did not have...the modern day cooking scenario is fine...but for the times you want something alittle more "fancy" and "classy" these OLD TIME recipes have most of the modern ones beat by a mile...YES I would recommend The Unofficial downton Abbey cookbook to my friends, and my daughters and daugher-in-law.

I got this cookbook as a gift for my mother, who is a HUGE Downton Abbey fan. I also gave her the CD with with music from the television series. She loves both. The cookbook, for her, is simply a fun read rather than actually making the recipes, as many of them require some time and finesse (as you would expect from that historic period). The book would have been even more entertaining if it had included some photos or scenes from the Abbey kitchen, Mrs. Patmore, the servants, or some of the other characters in the series!
