I started to read Phyllis Whitney in my teens, almost 50 years ago. I have all her books in paperback form. I am glad it's now in kindle because those old books are already brittle with age and not easy to hold with out tearing the pages. Her books are extraordinarily well written and are romantic suspense classics. For me, they are the best in the genre of that time. And I have all the popular ones: Mary Stewart, Victoria Holt, Susan Howatch....This is not to say that she has written a couple of books that were not up to her usual standard s like the Moonspinners and Turquoise Mask. But in the whole, her books are real page turners. It is good that the kindle editions now have biographical pictures of her. I truly enjoyed them.

I first read this book in the late '50 and LOVED it. I is a novel which takes place during the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire. It deals with the earthquake, the fire, the evacuations, and the story of people who lived through it. It contains a lot of history, a little "clean" romance, and a lot of action. As a teenager, I had never learned to love reading. When I read this, all that changed and I became a life-long reader! I'd recommend it to anyone, but historical fiction lovers, women, and teenagers will probably be most "taken" with the novel.

Phyllis A. Whitney was the best author of historical and contemporary romantic adventures, bar none. Discovering her work at an early age cemented my lifelong love of reading. Thank you for bringing her early works back into print. Please, please, produce downloadable mp3 audiobooks of her early masterpieces, like this one. Old CDs of her work are listed for hundreds of dollars, there is a demand!

I've been re-reading Phyllis Whitney books that I enjoyed as a teen. She had the gift of atmospheric suspense that is absent from some many books written today.

Set in San Francisco during the Great Quake, this is a story of how personal experiences change how we perceive our lives. Sarah is the main character who learns that prestige and having the finer things in life aren’t as important as they seemed. Nice story from beginning to end.

I READ ALL HER BOOKS MANY YEARS AGO. DECIDED TO REREAD THIS ONE AS I ENJOY BOOKS ABOUT SAN FRANCISCO. I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED IT AS I HAD THE FIRST TIME. DEPICTION OF EARTHQUAKE AND AFTERMATH WERE INFORMATIVE. SHE DEFINITELY HAS A FEEL FOR THE CITY ESPECIALLY IN HER DESCRIPTION OF THE FOG. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

I read this book when I was in high school. It is still a good book. Ms. Whitney, even in death, her writing speaks.

Same Phyllis Whitney I remember from years ago. Hope her books never come off the shelves. Keep them coming over and over again!

It has been several years since I have used such a planner and I've always found them helpful, so I tracked down this one. In the past I have used planners with photography of wildlife or nature, and this year I decided to try the one with cute art. It is very pretty and very functional . . . but I find myself surprised how few pieces of art there actually are. For instance, the same art headlines the page of every week in the month, which probably makes sense (though I didn't expect it). But several of those are quite similar to one another, and most or all of them are repeated in multiple months. For instance, a blue-colored bird looking left over its shoulder is the bird for August 2018, January 2019, and August 2019. There's also another blue-colored bird looking left and one looking right. Next year I think I'll go back to the planners with more than 50 different photos. It will serve its intended purpose, but I wouldn't have bought it had I known of the repetition.

I love this little planner. It's the perfect size for me to be able to carry around in my purse but also large enough where I can write enough information in it. It's fairly simplistic, which I also like... not a lot of unnecessary pages and space that go unused and just add bulk. The artwork and colors are gorgeous! I need to have the at-a-glance for the entire month so I can see everything at once, and then the following pages broken up by week where I can put details, lists, goals, etc. So the layout is perfect. The paper is also a decent quality - not too thin which is important if you like to use colored pens and markers like I do. I have only had SLIGHT bleed-through if I've gotten too heavy handed with the markers, but it has held up pretty well. The spiral bound design is a tad on the large side, but I don't find it overly cumbersome and it allows my planner to lay flat open. The only "downfall" of this planner is that the pocket opens towards the outside (pic posted) and not the inside toward the binding. I feel things aren't as secure as other planners I've had that have the pocket toward the inside. I just keep a paperclip on it to prevent anything from falling out. Other than that this planner brings me a little bit of joy every day just to see all the bright colors and gorgeous pictures every time I open it.

This is a great planner! 1The size is perfect for a purse, backpack, or even to throw in your car's glove box. It's sturdy and has a nice elastic band to keep it close. The illustrations of the birds throughout the book are beautiful! The weekly part of the planner has nice lined pages. There are also a ton of note pages throughout the book.

I like the illustrations. I don't like the Wiccan holidays (to be fair, they do include Jewish, Christian, Hindi and Islamic holidays as well.) I wish it had monthly tabs and I don't like the size of the binding. The planner is small (5 x 7) which I love, but the binding is huge. I almost sent it back over the binding, but after spending hours looking for a planner with a small binding (the ones by Blue Sky are perfectly what I want except they are made in China) and not finding what I want except the one made in China, I am going to keep this. Every time I think about complaining about the binder, I will rejoice that I am not supporting that communist regime.

The layout of this planner is perfect - enough space to write and plan ahead, but no fluff or unnecessary features. It is a great size - big enough to comfortably write in, but it doesn't take up too much space on the desktop and can easily be tucked into a purse. I love the spiral binding and the hardcover - it lays flat easily when open, and feels secure when it is closed. Also, the materials are high quality. Last but not least - the artwork is amazing! The birds are so beautiful!!

Wow! So cute and pretty pictures. Works for me! I would see how others would find this too small and not enough details to fill in their busy life schedules. I originally bought a big planner from one of those craft stores and it didn’t serve my purpose. Too much to make it work. This is perfect and has a little pocket in the front. Only thing I would recommend the maker do is have a stronger cover. I’ll definitely by next years. Not sure why planners begin in August? Because of the school year?

A great weekly planner. It is quite beautiful, with plenty of writing room. I like that it is a full 17 months. The spiral is well made and makes it easy to write on every page as the book lies flat. The only improvement I felt compelled to make is to put tabs at each month. That's just me, though. I have no complaints.

This planner is my favorite of all time!! It has plenty of space to write down my tasks and appointments for each day, as well as extra space on other pages for "notes" that I may need to jot down! It is the perfect size to carry around with you, either in a backpack or purse, or you can keep it open on your desk to see the day's events. I am going to buy another one from this same artist when it finishes! Love these planners and the bird design is simply the cutest ever!!

After reviewing a somewhat mediocre book last week from fantasy author Shari Tapscott, I was pleased to find that I thoroughly enjoyed her retelling of the fairy tale "Puss in Boots". The Marquise and Her Cat is by far the best book I've read by Shari thus far. It remains faithful to the original fairy tale while offering a gender-reversed protagonist along with several other fun twists. Before reading this book, I never realized how much I wanted a fully fleshed out adaptation of "Puss in Boots." Though Puss appears in Shrek 2 as well as other spin-offs and sequels from the franchise, the fairy tale itself is still pretty obscure. Even though I had read it a long time ago, I forgot most of the details and never realized how entertaining it could be with just a bit more imagination. The Marquise and her Cat is the story of Etta, a miller's daughter with two brothers. True to the fairy tale, her brothers inherit very nice possessions from a recently deceased relative while Etta is left with the cat. She thinks she got completely screwed over by her eccentric aunt until she learns that Puss can talk, and he begins concocting a convoluted scheme to bring Etta great fortune. Changing the main character from male to female was a clever notion since the "rags to riches" concept tends to be more popular with female leads such as "Cinderella," which is also why most versions of "The Prince and the Pauper" tend to be gender-reversed. Puss's schemes are borrowed directly from the original fairy tale, but it feels fresh and new to read about Etta pretending to be a marquise and wearing fancy clothes that she is not used to because she would never even consider doing anything like that if not for her talking cat. She often finds herself questioning her own sanity, but she goes along with it in spite of everything because she can see that Puss only has the best of intentions for her.Shari Tapscott also incorporates a love triangle into the story. She does this in a bold way by alternating the perspective of each chapter between Etta and Beau, one of Etta's suitors. This is not the first book I've read that switches perspective between the two main love interests. In fact, I've written a book like that myself. The technique can be hit or miss depending on the author's intentions. In this case, I'm not so sure it was the best idea. Even though there was a love triangle between Beau and Kerrick, we only see Beau's perspective of the romance, which makes it extremely obvious which one Etta will end up with. There are also certain details that get revealed early on in the Beau chapters that would have been more of a fun surprise if we didn't learn about them until later from Etta's perspective. Despite that, the love triangle was a fun twist on the original tale that added some suspense and intrigue. After reading how well "Puss in Boots" translated to a novel in The Marquise and Her Cat, I'm surprised there aren't any other popular adaptations of the tale. It has everything you could possibly want from a classic fairy tale--fun animal sidekicks, clever schemes, romance, a fearsome ogre, and a noble protagonist achieving happiness and fortune. Shari Tapscott did a wonderful job of fleshing it out into a full-length story that accentuated all of the humor, fun, and fantasy of the fairy tale. This is the first book of her Fairy Tale Kingdoms series, in which she retells classic fairy tales. The second book, The Queen of Gold and Straw, is a retelling of "Rumplestiltskin."I'm so happy I decided to give Shari Tapscott's writing another chance with The Marquise and Her Cat. This book gave me a new perspective on a classic story and made it more appealing to me by making the protagonist female. It was a fast read that was full of humor and fun. Even though I didn't think Beau's chapters were necessary. it was nice to read about Etta through his eyes instead of only seeing her perspective. Every time Puss said something, I wanted to smile and laugh, especially when the characters reacted to hearing him for the first time. His schemes got so ridiculous that it was amazing that Etta and Beau continued to reluctantly follow along when they secretly wanted to torment the cat for putting them in such embarrassing situations. Of course, it all works out in the end, and a good time is had by all.

This wasn’t a bad book. It was well written and edited, however it didn’t really have any sort of “wow factor” that you usually expect to find in fairy-tale retellings. The only real twist in the story was that Puss did not get his boots until very late in the book. Outside of that, this was a very straightforward retelling of the Puss in Boots story. The book starts off with Suzette & her brothers at the reading of their aunt’s will. Her eldest brother gets the mill, her middle brother the donkey, and Suzette gets the cat. She is given a small amount of money that is supposed to be used to purchase boots for the cat. In an act of defiance, Suzette uses the money to purchase new boots for herself instead. Shortly thereafter, she discovers that Puss can speak and after apologizing for not buying him his boots, the tale follows the usual progression of the Puss in Boots story, minus his boots.I was enjoying this story, despite it not really having any surprises, until I read a comment about the donkey being a “Valiant Steed.” It was really the only reference to the donkey in the story, and was clearly a reference to the Shrek animated movie. That right there made me very nearly put the book down and move on to something else instead. It just had no place in this tale, and it never came up again. Had the author found more of a way to weave the reference in so that it fit better, it would not have bothered me as much as it did. I did, however, continue on and finish reading the rest of the book.Overall, it was an okay story. There were no surprises and nothing unexpected. I had really been hoping for more though, some sort of unexpected plot twist that never appeared. In other words, I’m afraid this book left me feeling a bit disappointed. Others may enjoy it, but I was really left wanting something more.

I love fairy tale retellings and had never read one for Puss in boots so I wanted to give this a read. I'm not really familiar with the Puss in boots story, the only time I've ever really encountered the character is from watching the Shrek movies, so I had no idea what to expect. It was a decent read, I liked it, but it didn't quite reach my 4 star marks so I'd give it more like 3 and a half stars. It was a bit slow for me, it takes a while to really get going. The romance was okay, there is a bit of a love triangle, but it's done in a realistic way, the heroine has to really get to know both of these guys and sometimes one person's feelings for another person can really change over time so I thought that was done well. There are two main characters whose POVs we see from, we see a lot from Etta, the heroine, but not much from Beau and I really wanted to see more from him. Puss the cat was kind of a strange character, he acts like a cat in many ways, but I really wanted more out of him, he's never very forthcoming and acts like he barely cares what happens, honestly I didn't really like him that much. Overall this was a good read, it's clean and light so I think YA readers would enjoy it the most. I think I would read more by this author in the future.

I was totally satisfied with this retelling from a variety of viewpoints of the old Puss in Boots tale (one of my favorites). Etta is the typical not satisfied with her assigned lot in life young adult, as yet untouched by love, and without wealth to sustain her. She is surrounded by a world of men who treat her like a lesser being in a world of men. The death of a relative leaves her only a cat as her legacy. This part of the tale is never quite connected as to why she was left the cat, but this is the root of the plot. Etta engages in hunting, traveling, young love, and family worries all directed by the cat, who is gifted with the ability to speak, but chooses carefully those to whom he reveals it. A satisfying development in the love story with a carefully thought through and believable twist winds through the daily activities as Etta seeks her future.
