If a serpent swallows the spittle of a fasting man, it dies. Trees felled in the wrong season breed termites. If eels are drowned in wine, those who drink it get a loathing for liquor. These and similar flights of fancy were articles of faith in the twelfth century—the era of the fascinating Latin prose bestiary translated in this volume. The translator is T. H. White, author of The Once and Future King and outstanding medievalist. Of The Book of Beasts, White writes: "No Latin prose bestiary has ever before been printed, even in Latin. This is the first and only English translation in print." The bestiary was a bestseller in the Middle Ages, a kind of natural history cum-zoological survey that presumed to describe the animals of the world and to point out the human traits they exemplified. Combining the surprisingly accurate with the endearingly phantasmagorical, the bestiarists came up with a bewildering array of real and exotic creatures. The behavior or attributes of the animals often functioned as a metaphor for teaching religious, moral, and political precepts. In addition to a multitude of real mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish, described here with varying degrees of zoological accuracy, the bestiarist introduces a swarm of fanciful denizens thought to haunt the Dark Ages: manticore, a creature with a man's face, a lion's body, and a ravenous appetite for human flesh; dragon or draco, the biggest serpent and the embodiment of the Devil; amphivia, a fish that could walk on land and swim in the sea; jaculus, a flying serpent; the familiar phoenix; the griffin; and other exotic fauna. Much of the charm of this edition lies in the copious footnotes compiled by T. H. White. With immense erudition, wit, grace, and a singular lack of condescension, the author illuminates literary, scientific, historical, linguistic, and other aspects of the bestiarist's catalog. He further enhances the volume with informative discussions of the history of the bestiary from its origins in remote oral traditions; through Herodotus, Pliny and Aristotle; during the medieval period and the Renaissance; and up to Sir Thomas Browne's Vulgar Errors (1646). Both amusing and amazing, The Book of Beasts is not only a rich survey of the proto-zoology on which much of our later science is based, but also a revealing, illustrated examination of how pre-scientific man perceived the earth's creatures. I bought this as a gift for my husband, he LOVED it! The book has very nice illustrations, and the translation is very nice to read! I will admit, it made me laugh, but overall extremely enjoyable!

A good resource for educators and parents especially. It's approachable and makes you feel the productive kind of shame (not the punitive kind). But, like many books, it repeats some of the same points over and over. After a while, you begin thinking, "OK, I don't need to hear about one more research study to see the point you're making!" That being said, I did enjoy reading it and I plan to return to it when building an anti-racist, anti-bias identity curriculum for my students this year.

This book starts out with some fun thought-provoking (and maybe even eye-opening questions for some)that set the scene for the rest of the book. But most of the book is not new or innovative. If you're already informed with the issues of biases in society, you probably know what this book has to offer. The appendix is dense with suggestions for how to avoid biases in the workplace. For a business owner or executive, read the appendix and that's probably the best use of your time.

The best book about bias I've ever read! Clear, concise and doesn't point any fingers. This is who we are and we need to learn to deal with it!

Well written so that non engineers can understand and enjoy. Can’t remember when I have enjoyed a book as much.

Built was a fascinating book for those interested in engineering and construction. While reading the first few chapters, I began to think the book was simply a review of basic engineering concepts like compression and tension. However, the more I read, the more this book entertained me with engineering stories from ancient history all the way to modern times. Roma did an excellent job explaining engineering concepts in a simple way. I'm a Civil Engineer but I'm confident that if I handed this book to my girlfriend, a dental hygienist, she would be able to grasp the different topics. So what started out as a basic overview of engineering principles evolved into amazing stories about a wide range of structures and systems across the earth. She discussed skyscrapers, bridges, caissons, raft foundations, building materials, sewer and stormwater design, the future of engineering, women engineers and more. It was an easy, fast read, and I plan to pass it around my office for everyone to enjoy.My background: Civil Engineer working in Construction Engineering.

I met the author when she was just a little girl living in Ithaca, NY, where I worked with her Dad at NCR as a product manager. It is a pleasure to see such a bright young girl grow into an accomplished adult. The title might make you think this is a book for engineers and architects, but it's not. It is a fascinating collection of stories about a "maker" of a different sort - an engineer. For anyone who is curious about how things work, you will enjoy this book.

A lively discussion of engineering achievements in structures with explanations of the techniques used. The author is clearly expert in her field of structural engineering and loves her profession. This book is a great science book for non-scientists. Roma Agrawal, an engineer best known for raising The Shard in London, explains the rudiments of structural-engineering for non-engineers.In easy to read chapters and prose, Agrawal explains many of the important concepts and advancements that define the progress in her field: domes, aqueducts, skyscrapers, earth and foundations, sewers and tunneling......Moving between history and examining milestones of construction and her own experiences as a successful and curious engineer, Agrawal acquaints the reader with the major concepts, precepts, and laws that have made structures stand or fall over time. Readers perhaps not aware of The Shard - her groundbreaking tower in London, will be aware of Rome's aqueducts, Brunelleschi's dome, London's sewers, and the Brooklyn Bridge. These historical touchpoints and the people who made them are an excellent draw into this well written and interesting book that educates as well as pleases the reader.

I bought this book after reading a review in the Wall Street Journal. There were some very interesting parts of the book but some topics were covered in a superficial way. The script writing on the drawings was very hard for me to read...I gave up on some terms. I also think more effort and detail could have gone into the line drawings.

A really good book. I'm a mechanical engineer and i almost didn't buy it thinking it was going to be written for non technical people. Well it was but it was great - I loved it. Ms.Agrawal did a super job covering a lot of topics very well, in various parts of the world in a very interesting way, all complete. She is very talented. I recommend it.

I think that I’ll notice more of what’s around me after reading this well done book. London is a great city for architectural exploration. My free weekends there now have several outings planned in my head.

Really cute, easy to understand, book. Written especially for families with adopted children, but I think it’s also an awesome tool to teach diversity and openness to children from all types of families.

This is a simple yet beautiful story of adoption. The illustrations are excellent too. I will enjoy reading this book with my daughter for years to come.

I love that the book illustrations looks at a child’s infant adoption journey and then encourages fun and love throughout life. I love that this book does not shy away from grief but it is also simple enough for a child.

What a cute book! This is a great book for all kids, adopted or not. My son loves the illustrations. The author does an amazing job telling about the love of adoption, and I enjoyed reading about the Arthur's adoption story.
