From the Back Cover

Assemble the complete stack required to build a modern web app using MongoDB, Express, React, and Node. This book also covers many other complementary tools: React Router, GraphQL, React-Bootstrap, Babel, and Webpack. This new edition will use the latest version of React (React 16) and the latest React Router (React Router 4), which has a significantly different approach to routing compared to React Router 2 which was used in the first edition of the book.Though the primary focus of Pro MERN Stack is to equip you with all that is required to build a full-fledged web application, a large portion of the book will be devoted to React 16. The popular MEAN (MongoDB, Express, AngularJS, Node) stack introduced Single Page Apps (SPAs) and front-end Model-View-Controller (MVC) as new and efficient paradigms. Facebook's React is a technology that competes indirectly with AngularJS. It is not a full-fledged MVC framework. It is a JavaScript library for building user interfaces (in some sense the View part). Yet, it is possible to build a web app by replacing AngularJS with React – hence the term MERN stack. You will:Discover the features of React 16 to get the maximum out of this libraryGain the basics of MongoDB, Express, and Node to build a web appWork with other libraries complementary to React, including React-Bootstrap, React Router, and GraphQLUse tools such as Babel and Webpack required to build JavaScript-based SPAs Tie all the components together to build a complete web app.

I rarely read book blurbs, even more rarely do I believe them, and never make a decision to read a book based upon its fulsome—and usually wildly ineffective and misleading—blurb.Case in point here: this novel is for “fans of All the Light We Cannot See, Beneath a Scarlet Sky, and The Nightingale.” I thought All the Light We Cannot See was adequate, but certainly not worth a Pulitzer or the gushing reviews that followed like lemmings. As for The Nightingale, I found it overwrought, rife with clichés—the overused and stupid trope of a French/Dutch/Norwegian/whatever woman falling for a Nazi soldier—and oh-so-blah. Beneath a Scarlet Sky was the worst of them all for more reasons than I want to convey here. Go read my review if you want to know more. What these three books had in common was that they all kept WWII at arms’ length; none of them drew the reader into what the horrors of war were really like opting instead for romance, improbable derring-do, and nothing of substance. So I should have passed this novel up, afraid of another third-rate WWII tale, afraid of another disappointment from First Reads. But no. Like the main character, Anton Starzmann, I took a leap of faith in an uncertain literary world.Folks, this book is magic. I began reading at 5:15 this morning, and finished about thirty minutes ago, Other than the obligatory coffee and bathroom breaks, I have done nothing but read, and marvel. My Inner Critic took a well-deserved nap, with nothing to carp about.First, I found the writing to be elegant and descriptive when required, then spare and taut to augment tension. The dialogue is pitch-perfect, with carefully-crafted voices for the diverse characters, especially the children, which is where many an author fails dismally. Hawker intersperses a fair amount of German throughout, some translated, some not, but her preface explains most if not all the terms used. The judicious—and proper!—use of a foreign language in this novel works, unlike some authors who subscribe to the “Please, Monsieur, not zee bullet!” or worse, “Le tempête, it ees approaching” school of writing.Second, each character, whether the prominent ones of Anton Starzmann, Elisabeth Herter, and Father Emil, or the secondary ones to include the three Herter children, a few villagers of the nastier type, and other bit players are fully developed, distinct, and, best of all, unique. All right, the village gauleiter was rather recognizable as the usual small-time Nazi thug, but nevertheless well-drawn.Third, I haven’t encountered a character as complex, as haunted, as aware of his failings and weaknesses, and as conflicted over the good as he knew it as a Franciscan friar and the bad of Nazi Germany. Not one to see things in black and white, Anton struggles with grey as he roundly condemns the Nazi program known as T4 and plans ways to resist it and other atrocities, and at the same time feels a moment of compassion for Wehrmacht soldiers who may have been forced to serve because of threats against their families. This is the real deal, an Everyman in times of crisis, forced to decide what he will do, and what he can do in the face of true evil. Not a cliché to be found here.Fourth, the sense, the feeling, of place is beautifully drawn without overwhelming the reader with detail. This small, insignificant German village some 30 kilometers from Stuttgart cannot be mistaken for a small village 30 kilometers from Paris, for example. It’s also a village in wartime, winter and summer, with the weight of daily uncertainties, hunger, fear, and poverty. The war is also very present: planes fly over on their way to bomb cities, but the village just might catch a few bombs dropped in error at night; the always unannounced arrival of the SS; the Wehrmacht popping up—literally—from the ground; and wore, who can be trusted among the fellow villagers, and who would turn you is for saying the wrong words, looking suspicious, or having a bit more to eat than your neighbor? The war is definitely here, and it is most assuredly not romanticized or sanitized. Elisabeth does not overcome her hatred of Nazis and sleep with an officer because he might be one of the good guys. Anton does not perform feats of valor and bravery, meeting every important person in Germany while doing so. And the three Herter children do not go blindly through the war marginally worried or inconvenienced. No, their days are days of terror, laced with random bits of love and kindness to alleviate the horrors visited even on children.Absolutely, unequivocally, and without a single reservation, I recommend this book. It makes so many others set during WWII seem like dreck. Oh, and pay particular attention to the author’s notes at the end.

A quiet, unsung, unlikely hero dedicates his life to others while the world around him is at war. The book will strike you right away with the lovely writing, and you will grab on and hold tight the rest of the read. When a story and its characters stay with you even after you've finished reading, you know you've been moved, and this book delivers.

I did enjoy the book the afterword not so much. I wish the author had not tied her political views in the afterword to this beautiful story. The United States does not parallel Nazi Germany in any way. We do have groups that do believe along those lines but that is because we have freedoms in this country. I personally do not support these groups in any way but these factions do not decide the policies for our nation. It just left a sour note after an enjoyable read with a joyful ending. I wish I had stopped reading at the end of the story.

Get ready for frenetic historical ride because The Ragged Edge of Night is a gripping, soul-searing read that slams you into Anton Starzmann’s life as he journeys from his lost order and children and weds a widow in the tiny German town of Unterboighingen. Starzmann has exaggerated, perhaps even faked, a parachuting injury to escape the Wehrmacht. As he devotes himself to his new children and family, the loss of his other children and his betrayal of their trust drives him to the depths of despair and desperation. He will do anything to keep his new family safe and to stop the Führer’s reign of darkness. Along with other Germans scattered about the country, Anton will risk his life for freedom, facing down bullies, Nazi party members, informants, and his own fears as they build a fragile network intent on the death of Adolf Hitler. These staunch Germans are determined to free Germany from its own terrified inaction and a tyranny of evil.Even as the story entraps us with its suspense and plots, Olivia Hawker’s writing elevates this story from engaging and enjoyable to the sublime heights of introspection and insights on the human condition. Her writing is truly lyrical even in the tensest moment. To even try to describe it feels as if I am trivializing some part of it, and yet so many thoughts in this story immediately sear into you as truth and truths that should never be forgotten painted in word pictures indelibly inked onto your mind’s eye. And, while Jews enter the picture at times, it is the plight and desperation of the common German that is laid open for us. That they know they should have acted sooner and that the evil is on their heads; evil that they do not know how to halt. Evil that tears apart their country, their villages, their families. They themselves starve, are made homeless refugees, and have their children ripped from them and murdered. And, yet, through all the darkness, there is the hope of light, of dawn on the horizon. If they can just eek out one more meal, piece one more garment from rags, shelter from distant bomb strikes… If they just can … hope, then there is still hope. And so they keep on one step in front of the other, one neighbor fed, another neighbor clothed, a countryman sheltered, an orphan embraced. Treasures are hidden and depths revealed. One moment at a time, they hang on. If only the light will dawn… Will it ever dawn? This is a story that will leave you drained and spent when you are done, horrified by man’s inhumanity to man, and yet astounded by the depths of courage and love that spur people to sacrifice and redemption. If you love works of historical fiction, World War II history, biographies, etc., stop right now and grab this book. You don’t even need to finish reading this review. You are going to love it. I’ve read a lot of historical fiction about World War II, the Third Reich, etc., and this is up there with the best that I have ever read. If you were ensnared by Schindler’s List, Beneath a Scarlet Sky, The Hiding Place, or stories similar to those seminal works, you will be mesmerized by The Ragged Edge of Night. Please note that this book is strongly woven with a man’s and a nation’s faith. If you are offended by anything remotely touching upon Christianity, then a book about a friar is probably not the choice for you. Just a heads-up. For the open-minded, this is a book that will touch your soul, so you might want to get out a couple of boxes of tissues before you start reading. You are warned.I read this as my September Amazon First Read pick. Incredibly pleased with the quality of the story and writing. Olivia Hawker just jumped to the top of my must-buy authors list. Make sure to read the her notes after the story!

wrtitten with heart, history and humor amidst the horrors of the 3rd Reich. Being stripped of his vestments and his students, an almost 40 yr old friar is intent on finding a way to fight the Fuhrer anyway he can. He decides to take on a widow and her 3 children in a tiny German hamlet! The prose that Olivia Hawker writes is rich and enveloping and tells this story without resorting to foul language or overt violence; a breath of literary fresh air! The dialogue is natural altho’ the German was a bit much at times. Rich with fully developed characters and a fine sense of time and place, “The Ragged Edge of Night” is an historical novel that will instruct, enlighten and encourage you long after you’re finished with the final chapter. Heartily reccomended!

#589,945 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I learned from this book that a substantial literature of post-surveillance memoirs exists. I haven't read them, so perhaps my enthusiasm for this book is tainted by not having anything to compare it to. But I really enjoyed the book, and recommend it.My Life as a Spy is an ethnographic memoir by an anthropologist, well known for her research in Romania while it was part of the Soviet bloc, in the 1970s and 1980s. In the 2000s she received her 2000+-page secret police file, which showed how extensively she had been surveilled during that time, and how many of her friends and acquaintances had been compelled to spy on her.The importance of this book lies not in the revelations the dossier contains --- interesting though they are-- but in the author's attempts to make sense of it all. Verdery brings an open and clear-eyed seriousness to the task. Although not a page-turner, the book is highly readable with only a few traces of academic jargon. She devotes one long chapter to each of the two decades (the 70s and 80s) she conducted fieldwork in Romania, reading the secret file against her own fieldnotes, her letters home, and her research at the time. Then, she devotes a long chapter to the people who informed on her. She meets with friends who informed on her and attempts to understand what their experience was. She even tracks down the state security officers who recruited the informants and kept an eye on her. (She procured her FBI file, too.) Finally, she briefly ruminates on surveillance in Romania in general, and in such a way that will help us think about surveillance in general, esp. our own ubiquitous surveillance today via the Internet and mobile telephony. There are no good guys and bad guys here, only a society that was profoundly structured by surveillance. It would be foolish of us to think that "old economy" surveillance is no longer relevant. There is much to learn from this book, even if you have no prior knowledge or, or academic interest in, Romania or the former Soviet Union. This is because the author skillfully and diligently carries you along on her own personal quest to understand herself, the people around her, and the political regime that had so many people spying on each other. It will open your mind.I hope that the author will elsewhere reflect on the knowledge she produced -- i.e., the scholarship she published -- through the lens of the surveillance culture in Romania. Did it make a difference to the questions she asked and the answers she found?

The author goes into considerable detail discussing and analyzing her experiences with Romania’s security services during her periods of academic research there in the 1970s and 1980s. Here assessment is greatly aided by her state security file, which she has access to after the fall of the Communist dictatorship that existed during her field work.Although she was simply doing research projects, the state security system believed her to be a spy and went to great lengths to spy on her – using over 80 informants as well as electronic surveillance (a hidden video camera in her room, tapped phone lines, etc). She was even spied on in the U.S. after she returned home from one of her visits. Her security file included over 2,000 pages. Her book weaves together her present day reflections and excerpts form her state case file, her letters home during her research visits, and her field notes. She includes interviews done in more recent years with some of the government’s informers (some of whom she had had close relationships with when working in their country) as well as with a couple of the members of the security forces that handled her case. With uncommon honesty and insight, and the gift of hindsight, she shares the naivety and insecurities of her younger self. She also shares her various emotions and thoughts related to discovering (1) the great lengths to which the authorities went to investigate her, and (2) the fact that close friends reported her every move to security officers. Her book offers a frightening look at life in a police state during the cold war, when anyone could be informing on anyone else, and when to be suspected of espionage meant all your friends and associates became suspect also and thus were put in danger. It also shows how security officials can find “evidence” of wrong doing by having a bias that leads them to misinterpret what they see.In her concluding sentence in the Epilogue, she writes, “…I hope to have illuminated something not only of how Romanian socialism worked but of the new forms of statecraft, promising greater security through ever-heightened surveillance, that are developing worldwide.” This is, as far as I could tell, the only reference to surveillance outside of Romania and I would have liked her to share a little more about this more global perspective. It is hard to rate this book. It is scholarly but also readable. I give it four stars instead of five because for the general reader, like myself, her thoroughness makes the book a bit tedious. I would have liked more summaries of things and less material to read through.

I am from Romania and this is a very true account of those times. Thank you so much for writing this book!
