 Before I read the book, I had no idea who Yoshihiro Tatsumi is. He has been called "the grandfather of Japanese alternative comics" and he certainly deserves it.The Push Man and Other Stories is a collection of short stories previously published in Japanese, now translated and reformatted for the western audience by Adrain Tomine.In each story, Yoshihiro Tatsumi looks at a different facet of Japanese society. The main character is always a man filled with restrained angst, going about their daily jobs, ending with a solemn note. Every tale is filled with some form of sexuality -- sex, abortion, prostitution, etc.In the story "The Push Man", we're introduced to the pusher, whose job is to get commuters into packed trains by pushing them in. One day, he helped a lady whose clothes were torn from the pushing. They spent the night together and she invited him to her place the next day. The story ends with her sisters pushing each other away to get him. In "Telescope", a disabled guy committed suicide after being paid to watch someone else have sex. In "Test Tube", a sperm donor can't stop thinking about his recipient and eventually forced himself onto her. You can see that there are no happy endings here.The storytelling is masterly. Every story is told in a darkly comic style, short dialogues and cleanly laid out panels. Even without text, the stories will be easy to understand. Yoshihiro Tatsumi has a way of dissecting his characters, providing a very raw look at their hard and unforgiving life.The 16 stories are short. I like short if it means leaving the reader wanting more* at the end.It's highly recommended but certainly not for everyone.(More pictures are available on my blog. This first Drawn & Quaterly (lavish, beautiful hardcover) compilation of Yoshihiro Tatsumi's work, edited by Adrian Tomine, consists of 16 short stories, originally published in 1969. Most of them are very short, just 8 pages long, and appeared in a magazine called 'Gekiga-Young'. Two longer stories at the end of the volume are more in line with what we will find in the two later books of stories from 1970 ('Abandon the Old in Tokyo') and 1971-1972 ('Goodbye').An alternative title for this book could be 'The worst jobs in the world'. This is a list of occupations of the protagonists of these stories (all men): * Factory worker * Porn movies projectionist (when porn was yet illegal) * Garbage incinerator operator * Massage parlor ad-man (i mean, the guy walking the street with a placard saying 'Massage Parlor / Open 10 AM - 5 PM') * University lab intern / sperm donor * Pimp * Push man (one who pushes passengers into crowded rush-hour subway trains) * Sewer maintenance worker * Handicapped & unemployed peeping tom * Contract killer * Auto mechanic * Office clerk * Disinfector (one that cleans & disinfects phones) * Factory worker * Seal authentificator at an insurance company * ... and we don't know the job of the man in the last story, 'My Hitler', if he has one.Also, for the women, we get quite a few bar hostesses.As you can see, Tatsumi's work depicts the underbelly of the affluent urban Japanese society of the economic boom of the 60s, dealing with themes of existential alienation and sexual frustration. His focus is always humanist, he's not a Marxist toting party line slogans about the woes of the proletariat. He is direct and physical, yet elliptical and poetic at the same time. I am heavily reminded of Shohei Imamura's movies of the same period, like Criterion's 'The Pornographers' and the box-set 'Pigs, Pimps, & Prostitutes'.Now the bad news. Reading this book in one sitting can be a rather monotone affair. The stories, while good when taken on their own, tend to be very much alike when taken all together. I don't know to what extent this is Tatsumi's fault (being rather one-noted in the year 1969, certainly the 8-page limit didn't help either) or Adrian Tomine's fault (in not choosing two or three stories that diverged from the common pattern.) Certainly the stories in later volumes are more varied in setting, structure and subject matter, as well as having some women protagonists, too. We must also remember that the natural habitat for this stuff is a bi-weekly manga magazine, not a "graphic novel".Another qualm is the "Westernized" left-to-right format, that plays havoc with the original page layout. Hey, publishers, I've been reading manga in the original Japanese format for years now, and my head have not exploded yet, it's a myth!Despite these shortcoming this is a must read for all Gekiga aficionados, or adult (as in grown-up) comics readers in general. Or, even more in general, for readers of good literature.

These are Yoshihiro Tatsumi's stories from 1969, part of a series promoted by another comics artist whose works I always read: Adrian Tomaine. These stories could certainly be about real people, as we are all pretty weird under the skin. The stories are almost shocking in their twisted way, unless you've read some of Tatsumi's work before. Think of the most outrageous human behavior you can imagine, and it'll show up in one of Tatsumi's stories. If you're a fan of Yoshihiro Tatsumi or Adrian Tomaine, you won't want to pass this one up.

Gripping. Like potato chips you can't just have one. Savage, shocking, tender, at times morbidly hilarious. These are incredible short works by a master of story-telling. If you are even reading this review, that means you have gotten this far already. Buy this, borrow this, read these somehow. They will only enrich your life.

Most of the stories in this book aren't nice. After the first couple of stories, you start to feel the wincing in your face as you start a new one. They are very well illustrated and the storytelling is what makes you read every single one of them. It definitely makes me want to read his other work.

I've been a fan of The Human Chronicles since I discovered the series a few years ago. The author has a writing style that makes it easy to read and a story that makes you want to read. These books are patterned after the old serial novels of the 19th century where each book adds to the story, but you can jump in anytime and enjoy (although knowing the back story does help).This book is the best so far, imho, and lays the foundation for several future twists and turns - something you'll get used to as a reader. The unexpected is part of the fun. The interaction between the characters is another part of the fun. Mr. Harris has provided his characters with humor, wisdom, wit, attitude, and distinct characteristics that you will draw you into each character - some more than others. The evil villain, the hero, the supporting cast - they are all well written and developed.So get it - enjoy it - then go start with book 1 of the series and really get to know the characters that you were just introduced to.

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode of Adam Cain. And everyone was there except Airell! After so much genocide Kracion deserves a whole lot of Karma. It’s so sad that so many worlds are now missing from the galaxy. I love what Panur did with his strategy and his tactics will change the human/mutant dynamic in the future. And I hope that Nunki will do his part in stabilizing the universe. This was a thrill ride all the way. I was happy to here about Monty too. I’m also very glad to know that the next Human Chronicles will be coming out in April. I will look for the info on the FB page. I am as always an addicted fan!

The great joys of The Human Chronicles are the author's clever and well thought out resolutions for Adam Cain's trials and tribulations. No matter the situation, I am always surprised and delighted with the outcome.

This book was just as good as the rest of the Adam Cain novels. I found them all to be real page turners. I just had to keep reading to see what would happen next. I fully enjoyed this book and I am sure you will too

They are known for having pages loaded with little microcosms of information so that students can learn snippets of things and go back later and learn more again. This book is set up similarly. IT has a little introduction to a variety of artistic styles and periods of art. They manage to tie in basic ideas and concepts including modern things people do with art (cellphones) to help art be relevant to the new generation coming up.HOW DOES THIS BOOK MEASURE UP?Some of the pages in this book are very well laid out. The flow is nice, the colors are balanced, and the reader is guided through a nice flow around the pages to make it a pleasure to remain on them to learn even if it is just a little bit.Some pages, however, are so disorderly and agitating that they make us want to get away from them. They do not make the reader want to stay and learn, but just quickly turn to the next page. Not much to see here...IS IT A GOOD INTRODUCTION FOR KIDS IN HOMESCHOOL?This is not only good for kids as a book to have at home, but it is great to use in homeschool. There is even a good lesson in how NOT to layout pages in publications that you can use it for as well as examples of the good ones. As a homeschooling mother, I've found this book to be a wonderful introduction to art for children. While it is not going to offer a full lesson on art appreciation, the book covers an array of different topics in some detail, where a child can walk away after reading this with a good understanding of art appreciation in general. The book can be utilized in multiple ways. I can have my child read the book all the way through. We can also pick and choose which topics to read and then further our discussions by branching out into a full-on study. Again, we homeschool, so the collection of art related topics being discussed are quite vast, and helps give us some inspiration on what to explore next.The book really covers almost all the bases of art from color mixing and knowing the difference between primary and secondary colors (color wheel, complementary colors, etc.) to art history and movements (Renaissance, etc.), famous artists, and different styles and techniques used in artwork (painting people, photography, symbolism, light and shadowing). Even working with various lines and shapes are discussed. The topics are conveniently set up in a table of contents in the beginning of the book, so you can find exactly what you're looking for. The back of the book includes a summarized timeline that is spread out through four pages and starts from 30,000 BCE all the way to 2010. This timeline shows important information on noteworthy artists, movements, and styles throughout history. The last two pages include a glossary (with definitions) of important art related terms that are frequently used from digital art to still life to Expressionism, you'll see it here.From someone who took several art classes in college (appreciation, art history, composition, etc.), I was thoroughly impressed with the amount of detail that the book goes into. Yes, this is for children, so the topics are only displayed on a two-page spread, so it's obviously not going to go into every little detail and aspect, but there is still a lot of important information included, so kids can get a basic grasp of what they're learning about. Honestly, I really like this book (a lot!) and it has already become a fantastic resource for our homeschool art lessons.

Admittedly, I'm a Maxwell fan, but it was great to have my teen read this as I read the adult version. Such a great book with easy to understand steps. A fresh beginner can learn easily without complication. If you've ever tried online tutorials, like YouTube, you've probably found that often, they skip very basic steps, assuming you know them already, and you get lost. These books always ensure that every single button push and step is covered so that you are able to complete a project or lesson from start to finish without getting lost. There isn't much reading to do either. Generally, they give you a paragraph or two describing the concept of what you are about to do, then the rest of the chapters are filled with step by step screenshots of how to do each thing and what your screen should look like.I love that it comes with PeachPit lessons that you can download and work as you read the book. These lessons are always fun and thorough. It covers so many topics that even experienced users can refresh and learn new tricks. It shows you multiple ways to do things so you can choose your favorite way, and each time a step is needed, it repeats how to do it, so you don't have to comb back through the book to remember how to do something.Overall just a great book, like the rest in the Classroom in a Book series!

I always wanted to make video games as a kid. I rented Creative Cloud in 2013 thiking I could just jump into Flash and do just that. I started off trying to follow youtube videos. The frustrating thing about that were that the codes were blurry and I had to pause and zoom in to copy them bit by bit. There were also moments where I got stuck and couldn't figure out how he did that. For example-making a bird flap it's wings as it was going across the screen. Then,months later,I figured out that he double clicked the window and there was an action within that action. Long story short,I've been trying to run before I learned how to crawl.That being said,when I started this book,in the first chapter alone,there were little things I never knew that add up to eventually help me with the bigger things. There are times when I say to myself,for example:"Do I really have to draw this coffee cup here when I can do it so much easier in Illustrator,then import it here?" But as I patiently take it step by step,I also find in some of the small steps I learn things I never knew before. I'm only on chapter 2 ,but have already learned a lot to the point where I love it!I also bought "How to cheat in Flash CC" which looks really good too(probably for the more advanced users that already know Flash,which hopefully will be me by the time I read this book). Not only that,if I get stuck in the future,I just go back in book form to read what I'd forgotten. Coupled with my "Adobe After Effects CC in a classroom" book,I hope to know a lot more than I did before purchasing these. Which I'm sure I definitely will!

The first six chapters focus on Flash for video - which is pointless and it amazes me that they even include it. After Effects is supremely better for those purposes. Flash's purpose these days is to quickly create content for interaction design - which is what it excels at.If you've got a basic foundation for animating, you won't be impressed. I would recommend "How To Cheat in Flash CC" by Chris Georgenes (http://www.amazon.com/How-Cheat-Adobe-Flash-Animation/dp/0240525914/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1426086644&sr=1-1&keywords=how+to+cheat+in+flash+cc) Which provides a great system of individual techniques and is much better for reference.

I buy these books every time I get an Adobe Creative Suite upgrade. Learning the software has never been easier. They come with files and detailed instructions for learning your way through the software.

It is average as far as learning the concepts. To me they don't go in depth enough on the key factors of the software. I had to purchase it for school so that's why I bought it. Some of the Classroom in a Book series are better than others but with this one I was not too impressed.

This is a great book for people who need to learn Adobe Flash. I use this in a high school course to teach 9th-12th graders how to use Flash. It starts out for the beginner and gets better once you go through some of the chapters. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn Flash or get better with the program. If you already know how to use Flash then this book would not be very helpful to you.
