This was a very confusing book due to the dates of rulers and their women. There seemed to be too much overlap. I would have appreciated more about the culture handed down to the Ottomans and the culture that survived after them. I did get a better view of the actions and problems of the ottomans in the Mediterranean and Western Europe during the times they were in power so I guess that is the most I could have expected.

Good introduction to the Ottoman Empire. I also read Suleiman the magnificent of the same series to enhance the experience. Well written and researched, entertaining while informative. One thing I like about this series is how much information is packed in a short book.

Like many other civilizations they start off in a tribal format, went to cities the on to a single main ruler (with others involved, of course) then on to an expansionist period and finally a gradual decline.There was a whole lot of brothers killing brothers to prevent them from getting to the throne. As with any culture there were both good rulers and bad rulers and even some horrific rulers.One thing that makes this different, though, is that there was the 'Sultanate of Women' where women ended up actually being the power. The book also points out how the harem was actually not the stereotype people have today.Another interesting point is that under Osman III Christians and Jews had to wear recognizable badges and clothes, predating the Nazi approach of the star the Jews had to wear, showing how history can repeat itself even in specific details.During WWI there were some 1.5 million Armenians killed by the government which establishes the Ottoman/Turkish empire right up there with governments that massacred people.The book is well done and is complete with maps, photos, and references.

Having never had a real curiosity for the Ottoman Empire, I found this guide by Captivating History to be informative and interesting! Learning the origins of the Empire and its people has been eye opening and I look forward to learning more.

Though not my usual interest in history, Captivating History does a great job at giving a lot of information and keeping the reader interested.

As you read the book you find that you did not know as much as you thought you did. It was an interesting read about the Ottoman Empire.

When I read or hear this practice in movies/printed word I realize that the author lacks the words to express their thoughts in a more meaningful and varied format. I had not found this excessive use of profanity as an excuse describing feeling in this author's other works. I also did not enjoy the lack of an ending and closure for this story. No need to bait me to read the other books, if you have done a good job with the previous story. Sadly for the first time I will have to think about ordering any more of this author's books.

I loved this book, but then I love all the books in the series starting at the very beginning with " The Chosen" series and all the ones that came out of it. Vampires, dragons and all the other shifters. I impatiently wait for each new release and have never been disappointed!In this book, Storm is one of the water Dragon princes. He's bored so decided to take part in the next bride hunt even though he's not interested in mating a female. Jolene is the human he ends up capturing but she's not interested in him as she can tell he is a player. She is almost 35 and knows the clock is ticking. She's there to find a mate and start a family with a male that is wanting the same thing. She's nothing like the females he has been with and although he won't admit it, he has fallen for her, and she fell for him as well, but he still lets her leave at the end of the 3 week trial period. Thankfully Charlene's books have a HEA ending!!! I highly recommend any/all of Charlene's books.

Storm, arrogant prince that he is, just wants to have some fun for a few weeks. Choosing Jolene at the bridal hunt means that her one-time chance will be wasted on a commitment-phobe. Storm has some (rather painful) lessons to learn about what it takes to be ‘the best.’I love that Jolene takes a stand, doing her best to wait for love. It just doesn’t work out as she envisions!This book is delightful! The author takes many of the clichés we use regarding men, women, and sex to portray Storm and Jolene’s courtship. It’s fun, funny, poignant, and sweet as can be!

Finally, more dragons!!! I loved this first book in the Water Dragons series!! Storm and Jolene were so opposites of each other, but it was definitely true that opposites attract in this case! They were so on fire together. They couldn’t agree and were always fighting, but that just made the getting together that much sweeter. I am also wondering how the Water Dragons are going to get rid of their approaching problem. I really can’t wait for the next book, Captured Dragon, to come out!!

Amazing start to a new series! Love how she put a cocky dragon and he got his but laid with a girl who wasn’t taking any of his crap. Until he finally brings her to an agreement. Great book. Can’t wait for the others. I am certainly waiting on Flood story. Such a broody man.

Loved it! Storm a spoiled, egotistical prince learns a whole lot about himself as he pursues Jolene. And Jolene’s clock is ticking and she needs to learn how to lighten up. I really liked this story but I wish the ending would have been more complete.

Hot, cocky, and only out for some fun. Clock is ticking, looking for commitment, lost her sense of fun. Oil and water. Sometimes we find what we desperately need without knowing it's what we really want. Thank you Charlene for another great read!!

We've seen a goodly number of recent "biographies" of God, and this is an interesting addition to the genre. Those who read the book seeking confirmation or disconfirmation of their own faith won't find either of these here (except in a brief conclusion plugging pantheism): it's simply a history of the concept of God as it has developed over the millennia, all the way from ancient cave paintings to the present.The book has an enormous section of footnotes, and these should not be skipped, since in many ways they are more interesting than the text is. For each chapter, we get quite a thorough discussion of the various controversies and contradictory views: What was the purpose and meaning of cave art? Was Akhenaten really a monotheist? Etc., etc. Interesting and worth reading. But this is also what had me tearing my hair out! After reading the footnotes, it's clear, for example, that nobody really is sure what was going on with those cave paintings. But in the text, we find Aslan calmly asserting (with no real evidence) that the well-known Breuil drawing often called "The Sorceror" was intended as the earliest known representation of God. It's a case of "The large print giveth but the small print (well, the footnotes anyway) taketh away."Another example: where and when and why did Judaism become monotheistic and leave behind the henotheistic view that other gods might exist but were subordinate? ("No other gods BEFORE me") In some ways this is the central point of the book, since the origin of monotheism is probably the most significant development in God's biography. Well, we get a good discussion in the text and footnotes, but (spoiler alert!) at the end of this chapter he leaves all this scholarship behind (footnotes suddenly disappear) in favor of a speculative claim that this was due to the Babylonian captivity: Marduk's defeat of Yahweh gave rise to cognitive dissonance and made the Jews decide to go all the way and insist that Marduk didn't even exist. I think few will find this, or many of his other conclusions convincing. The book is worth reading and I learned a lot. But don't believe everything you read.

If you read Reza Aslan's book "Zealot," do not expect this book to be the same or even the same style. That is not a criticism but a credit to Reza's immense scholarship. God-a human history takes on a topic of massive scope and brings information together from many different disciplines and puts it in a readable format. Reza introduces the earliest evidences of humans relating to a god. For example, if describes a one inch feminine idol that was found in Israel that dated back about 300,000 years, which predates Homo sapiens. Very deep subject matters are covered such as whether or not the god concept developed in service of early beings or was it hard wired. Many early people and cultures are considered. It was interesting to note that the earliest communication on cave walls was done by women and that the same symbols were used in caves on opposite sides of the world. Reza Aslan shows the flow that ultimately developed into the major religions of today. Those are just some tidbits but there is much, much, more. It was a good read for me and it led my mind in many fascinating directions. Aslan's work isn't just conjecture but is well documented. He has 105 pages of notes that allow the reader to verify what he says and follow the research deeper into other directions if he or she so chooses.

I devoured this book in a day or two, I didn't want to put it down. Growing up Catholic, but leaving the church as an adolescent, and now a deep spiritual person without religion, I found this book to be just what I needed. Aslan writes in a way that speaks to theological academics as well as spiritual lay people like myself. This book gave me a lot to think about, questions to ponder, and relief to see in writing beliefs I have always carried, but didn't know the historical facts to back up.Upon finishing God, I bought and read Zealot, another one of Aslan's books.I look forward to reading his other books, and possibly even starting a book club with my community to start conversation about the nature of God.

More like a "personal" history, Azlan silences the critics who complained that "Zealot" wasn't footnoted sufficiently, but this will garner a whole new range of criticism for its primarily-Western "people of the book" approach to God, but it's really more how Azlan himself has sifted and sorted through his prodigious religious knowledge to come to an understanding of the unity of God. An an unbeliever, I appreciate his scholarship, his synthesis, and his knowledge of the West; I remain perplexed how someone who can parse the development of ideas and trace them back to their mythic sources can remain a believer in a Supreme Being. But that aside, he's a terrific writer and thinker. I liked "Zealot" even more because it was so focused on the development of how Jesus became central to Christianity, and how the actual human being (assuming that he actually lived, and that at least I believe) fit into his own Zeitgeist.

I purchased this book for a friend for Christmas and he really enjoyed it! Beautiful photos of covered bridges in Indiana!

Covers most but not all of Indiana bridges.Is a list by county so you can tell what is covered and what is not. Pictures throughout the seasons.

The book gives a great look at the Covered Bridges in Indiana. Would reccommed to all those interested in Covered Bridges to add to thyeir library.

My friend loved this book! The pictures were very sharp and the selection of bridges throughout state were stunning. He told me he will treasure book for years to come.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for someone who loves to travel to see and take photographs of covered bridges. This book is beautifully illustrated but does not give the exact location of the bridges. It tells only the County that they are in. I will probably not purchase more of this author unless she changes her style of writing.

Having grown up in Indiana I enjoyed seeing many bridges that I had forgotten about. Hoping that I may return someday to visit those bridges I knew about and those that I have not seen.

I have seen virtually all of the covered bridges of Indiana myself. I think Marsha's pictures are great at capturing not only the bridges but also the character of the Midwest.

The cook in the family says there are some really nice recipes in this book. As a die hard non-vegan, I'm not so sure. ; )

Frugal Vegan is a very, very accessible cookbook. The recipes are simple yet creative and they really won't break the bank. It's a perfect book for someone like myself who wishes she/he was savvy in the kitchen but often doesn't have the patience or energy or resources to make something nutritious and lavish. I highly recommend this book!

The book delivers on its promise of fast vegan meals, with just a few ingredients that taste good. In particular the vegan quesadilla and chilled soba salads are awesome.The photos/layout of the book is appealing as well. But, the main thing is this is not a cookbook that claims to be easy, but in fact when you try it turns out to be rather involved and requires obscure ingredients. The recipes are fast and can be made with whole foods (not the corporation, the thing) that are not too hard to find. Only occasionally does it require something like vegan cheese.

A lot of these recipes have ingredients that I already have and I've only been eating vegan for the past month and a half. The very first recipe I tried was that easy vegan enchiladas. They were absolutely amazing. It was my first time using TVP. My parents came over to grab a container I had made for them, and they ended up eating the entire thing in my home. My meat eating loved them too. The best part was that it took me 10 minutes to make and 30 minutes in the oven. Recipes like the ones found in this book are great because they're easy and not time consuming. After coming from work and having three hours at most to cook dinner, feed and bathe my toddler and get him in the bed by 8 PM, I can say that this is the book I was looking for.

My problem with vegan cookbooks is the use of a lot of exotic (jackfruit), labor-intensive (nut milks), expensive (cashews), or distasteful (aquafaba) ingredients I'm not interested in. This cookbook primarily uses everyday ingredients you can find at almost any grocery store. Most of the recipes are very quick and tasty with short ingredient lists and something you can assemble after a long day at work and be sure to get your daily supply of vitamins and amino acids.

I'm happy to see that there aren't a bunch of cashew based recipes here and that most of them consist of things I can pick up at any grocery store. I'm looking forward to cooking!

I cannot express how much I love this cookbook, but I will try. First of all the recipes are easy to follow, have low cost ingredients you don't have to special order and most recipes have a picture. I am the only vegan in my family yet these recipes please my husband and mother in law that usually complain if something dead isn't on their plate. I ordered about 5 cookbooks this year and this is by far my favorite. If you can only buy one vegan cookbook this is the one.

While I'm not 100% Vegan the recipes in this book are easy to make and really freakin good. But the biggest compliment of all, even my 14 year old son liked it and he's a huge carnivore. Well done, great pictures and easy instructions.

OMG this cook book is amazing! I am working my way through doing at least one recipe a week and have LOVED everything so far. Highly recommend this book, the recipes are delicious, easy to make and very inexpensive.

Until someone mentioned “Fanatical Prospecting,” I had never heard of the book or its author Jeb Blount. Noticing the book was #1 on Amazon’s telemarketing best seller list, I ordered a copy and began reading with an open mind.The book, especially at the beginning and the very end, is about 50% standard sales motivation content covering well-trodden material like the amygdala/lizard brain, Amy Cuddy’s TED talk on body language, etc. However, the other 50% delivers very practical processes and templates that make the book one of the better sales books available. All told, I felt the book was a must read.Here is my summary of key-take-ways:1. Knowing that activity takes 90+ days to pay off, successful salespeople relentlessly fill their pipeline through a mixture of telephone, in-person, e-mail, social selling, text messaging, referrals, networking, inbound leads, trade shows, and cold calling.2. Here is the brutal truth: Salespeople who ignore the phone fail.”3. “Top performers organize their day into distinct time blocks dedicated to specific activities, concentrating their focus and eliminating distractions within those blocks… We schedule our prospecting blocks [on our calendars] into three “Power Hours” that are spread across the day—morning, midday, and afternoon.”4. “While setting an appointment is your primary objective with prospects you have already prequalified as potential buyers, gathering information is your primary objective with prospects you have not qualified.”5. “Our data and data that we've gathered and analyzed from a diverse set of sources indicate that it takes, on average: 1 to 3 touches to reengage an inactive customer 1 to 5 touches to engage a prospect who is in the buying window and is familiar with you and your brand 3 to 10 touches to engage a prospect who has a high degree of familiarity with you or your brand, but is not in the buying window 5 to 12 touches to engage a warm inbound lead 5 to 20 touches to engage a prospect who has some familiarity with you and your brand—buying window dependent 20 to 50 touches to engage a cold prospect who does not know you or your brand.”6. “The bottom line is people don't want to be pitched or “sold” on social media. They prefer to connect, interact, and learn. You must articulate the value of spending time with you in the context of what is most important to them. Your message must demonstrate a sincere interest in listening to them, learning about them, and solving their unique problems.”8. “Just saying, “I'd like 15 minutes of your time because I want to learn more about you and your company” works surprisingly well with many prospects.”9. “When salespeople ask me when they should leave a voice mail, I always answer, “When it matters.”… Keep voice mail messages to 30 seconds.”10. “Timing Teleprospecting Calls Is a Losing Strategy… So, forget about timing your calls and commit instead to a daily, first-thing-in-the-morning call block.”11. “The feeling of rejection happens the moment you get a reflex response, brush-off, or objection (RBO)… Overcoming doesn't work. There is a universal law of human behavior: You cannot argue another person into believing that they are wrong. The more you push another person, the more they dig their heels in and resist you… There is a better way. Rather than attempting to overcome—defeating or prevailing over your prospect—you should disrupt their expectations and thought patterns when they push back with a no. The key is a disruptive statement or question that turns them around so that they lean toward you rather than move away from away from you… When they say they're busy, instead of arguing them into how you will only take a little bit of their time, say, “I figured you would be.” Agreeing with them disrupts their thought pattern… When they say, “Just send me some information,” say, “Tell me specifically what you are looking for.” This calls their bluff and forces engagement… When they say, “I'm not interested,” say, “That makes sense. Most people aren't.” Their brain isn't ready for you to agree with them… One phrase you want to avoid is “I understand.” When you use the phrase “I understand,” you sound just like every other schmuck who uses this phrase as insincere filler so they can get back to pitching. It demonstrates zero empathy and tells your prospect that you are not listening and don't care.”12. The salespeople-help-salespeople hack is an awesome secret weapon.”13. “Truly effective salespeople understand that it is all about asking the prospect the right questions and demonstrating that you can help them solve a particular problem or issue.”14. Don't send bulk e-mail. Prospecting e-mail is one to one. It is one e-mail from your address sent to one individual, one e-mail at a time… Avoid attaching images… Avoid hyperlinks… never use “Hi” or “Hello” or “Dear” or any other salutation in front of your prospect's name. No one in business does that except salespeople. “Hi __” is a complete turnoff for prospects.”

This is a tough book for me to rate, because how much you get out of it really depends on your prior experience in reading sales books. I'm a completely scatterbrained prospector. I bought this book hoping to find information on many forms of prospecting, and how to bring it all together into a structure. After spending the money, and reading the book cover to cover, I can tell you what I found is a ton of motivational speaking with prospecting tips scattered about. You'll learn some good ideas about scripting for the phone, and in person cold calling. You'll get some good thoughts about using social media as leverage. And you'll get some information about time blocking your prospecting activities. If you have never read a book on prospecting and selling, this is a really nice all in one resource. If you've read a bunch of sales self help books, you likely won't find anything new here. With 320 pages, I felt for sure there would be a chapter on bringing it all together, like 'A day in the life of a fanatical prospector', to give the reader a sample framework in which to form a basis to change how they prospect. That's what I needed, as I'm pretty good with scripting, but my overall time management and flow of the multiple prospecting mediums sucks. That isn't in this book.So whether you think it's worth the money really depends on what you've read to this point. If this is your first sales book, and you are brand new to sales, it's a great place to start. If you've read a lot of other sales books, don't spend the money.An additional note: I'm getting a little frustrated with the fact that there are more and more books loaded with compensated reviewers on Amazon. Even more frustrating is how it seems like all of these sales self help authors endorse each other every time a book comes out. For example, Jill Koranth endorses seemingly every sales book that hits the market. And in exchange, she gets a shout out to her own stuff somewhere in said endorsed book. This one is no different.Hope this helps!
