A little too complicated on the math side. I know Turing was a mathematician, and his contributions were certainly astounding, but I was expecting more on Turing himself and the struggles he went through to be accepted, to overcome the prejudice against him and the penalties that were exacted against him due to his homosexuality, and some more insights into the man behind the math instead of the math itself, which I thought should have been subservient to the personal issues instead of the main focus. I was interested in the math as related to the unique constraints and equally distinct methods for solving this dilemma, and the subsequent effects Turning's innovations created, like the Turing test for artificial intelligence and the emergence of thinking machines, not necessarily the calculations he made.Too much math, too little man behind the math.

The acceptance of the man Alan Turing , and fully acknowledging his contribution to the world is barely understood as the general knowledge of The value of what he had done is so difficult to grasp. Considering the battles that had hinged upon the intelligence provided by Ultra, an analyst can reasonably conclude that this was the biggest story of the war, Without having won Stalingrad, the landings of Normandy and the battle of the Ardennes, the war could easily have been lost !!! Few persons have accurately been able to convey what it would have been like to have had the Allies lose World War 2 !!! The fact that he was a homosexual , and was so wrongly persecuted should factor into our modern thinking where "Don't ask...don't tell " was the best policy for any and all sexual preferences. Between Alan Turing , breaking the Enigma codes, and Werner Heisenberg , who purposefully sabotaged the German atom bomb effort, they are the two big heroes of the war . The world owes both a tremendous debt of gratitude. It should also be noted that the military edge in the Cold War, was owed more to our grasp of computer technology and coordinated systems that his intelligence and further development of his ideas, had provided the West with, was also a contribution that is underrated. .

This should be titled "The Man Who Knew Too Little About Writing Audiobooks". It's a horrible listen! It might be a better read, but this is definitely one situation where abridgment would be a blessing. There are long, dry readings of state tables trying to explain how a Turing Machine works. At the very minimum, these should have simply describe figures that should have been (but weren't) provided on the CD as a PDF.

If the title "The Man Who Saved England" were to be applied to anyone of the World War II period, Alan Turing and Winston Churchill would be the most likely candidates. But whereas Churchill operated in the public eye and was a bigger than life character, either revered or reviled by the public and his colleagues in government, the very nature of Turning's most important work, arcane, esoteric and shrouded by the Official Secrets Act, plus his low-key personal style, combined to condemn him to virtual anonymity.Turing's best-known accomplishments, his work in code breaking and in developing the computer, were not as dramatically presented in this book as I would have liked. I was hoping for the book to promote Turing; to bring him forward and upward into the limelight. Instead it leads the reader down into the minutiae of Turning's mathematics and his homosexuality. Consequently the co-tragedies of his persecution and suicide, the ultimate irony of a society killing the man who saved it, were not as strongly or as dramatically presented as they might have been.In fairness to the author, Mr. Leavitt probably told Alan Turing's story as Mr. Turing would have told it, himself. Rather than writing the promotional piece for Turning that I expected and wanted, Mr. Leavitt emphasized the mathematical challenges, achievements and social forces that shaped this brilliant man. Someone picking up this book to read about a mathematician and his work should find great interest in the details, the very details that for me were more of a distraction.

The first part of the book is a real mathematic challenge. But gives some insight as to the genius of the man. His society was more interested in protecting their own reputations rather than engaging his mind. At least the Queen has expunged his record and Alan has recouped his historical right. Seems to me that Britain doesn't encourage good minds.

I found I wanted to learn more about Alan Turing and the work he did to solve the Enigma Code along with his research and work in general after seeing the excellent movie. This book will help fill in and flesh out the man and his work.

This is a fantastic book about one of the most under-rated geniuses that worked in the field of mathematics, he basically invented the algorithm for computer science. Plus he helped win the war for the Allies.

I've read other books by David Leavitt and enjoyed them. I recently viewed the movie, The Imitation Game, and enjoyed it. So, I went searching for more about Turing. This book is a bait and switch. Leavitt purports to be a literary writer. This book is not a literary work about Turing, it is about Mathematics and Turing's "Machine." Don't waste your money like I did, don't purchase this book!

 My husband and I both enjoy muscle cars. In our youth, we both had and enjoyed some of these cars (his was a Chevrolet Impala and I had both a Plymouth Barracuda and a Ford Torino at different times.) These went by the wayside when the kids were born and gas prices nipped at the budget but now that we are empty-nesters we are considering purchasing and restoring one. Those dreams may only be fulfilled by watching “Counting Cars” but in the meantime, we will both enjoy coloring in this book.There are actually 24 different designs in this coloring book (I think that the 44 in the products description as I write this review is a typo.) The designs are in full page size and then, again, in smaller format at the back of the book. That gives you the opportunity to color them twice in both sizes or to use the smaller page as a test for color samples.Our grandson is both cars and “Cars” crazy at the moment, so we are coloring these designs for him. In the sample I show (if my photos show up!), I left the windshield uncolored as I will be attempting to color in eyes ala Lightning McQueen style for his enjoyment.All of the designs stop well before the binding. The designs are printed on one side of thin white non-perforated paper. I could easily get the page to lay flat by slightly breaking the spine. The binding is glued but there is plenty of room for you to cut a page out if you choose to do so as there is a framing line around each of the designs. This saves me a lot of time and ink in finishing the design, so I always try to mention it when the artist includes a frame.As with all CreateSpace coloring books, all of my markers bleed through and my gel pens either bleed through or leave a distinct shadow on the back of the page. In India ink artist pens leave a color shadow as well. My coloring pencils work well with paper. My soft lead goes on nice and thick; however, while my hard lead work well they also leave an indent at the back of the page. I will use a piece of chipboard or heavy paper behind the page I am working on so I don't ruin the following page with leaking ink or marring indents.While I could wish for thicker, perforated paper, it appears that this is the quality that comes from CreateSpace (which is an Amazon company.) What I really like about the CreateSpace is it is a way that independent artists can get their work self-published. That way, I get a huge choice of design styles albeit with not the best paper.

This is the 1st time I've bought this particular book from Jordan Biggio..it's not cluttered up like other color books are.. I am far from being an artist..I just like to color..I spend most of my day in an hospital bed due to my illness. These books are easy and keeps me focused especially when recieving treatment that is painful....thank you..really enjoy these books....

My fiancée loves it! The only complaint was the type of colored pencils I had purchased which was Crayola 12 pack lack of choice of colors. I have ordered him another book with 48 count Prismcolor pencils.

bought for my hubby and grandson they like the pictures very much not a lot of junk in pictures just the realistic looking cars very nice books one sided pages too neat looking cars 2 pics of each car 1 is whole and the other half page really nice i would say try them .

Perfect car coloring book for that Car guy, like that no ridiculous background. Has send set of images in smaller versions. The paper is not the best can see thru to next page. Glad only one sided.Focus on Cars from different angles. Can feel like guys they watch on Velocity designing for builds.

Bought this as a gift for a student in my high school special ed class who loves muscle cars. He lit up when he opened it! He was so happy he colored two pictures before he went home. Lots of different cars and fun to color- not simple drawings but way easier than all the adult coloring books so popular now.

I got these for my husband as he loves American Muscle Cars. We both now sit in the evening when the grandkids are gone and color as if we were children.

Someone needs to learn their cars... that is *NOT* a 1970 Mustang.

SIHPROMATUM is a little gem of a travel memoir. It depicts the author, at fourteen years of age, and her family (mother and two siblings) as they travel through Asia. Savannah Grace perfectly captures the mood and sentiments of her younger self--"Little Savannah," a reluctant participant and a bit ornery. She describes her life circumstances before the trip began, the trip itself, and how the trip was "life-altering." For the most part, I think her mother is an amazing woman to have packed up her kids, to see a part of the world she'd always wanted to visit. Although they made a couple of missteps (the desert tour was one), the trip exposed Little Savannah to other cultures, languages, and social mores. Not to mention foods. ('Horse milk'?) It was, indeed, a mini-education. But now that I've read her account of wandering in an Asian desert, I can safely say I know what that's like and I don't need to do that.One thing I noticed immediately was the author's unique writing style--with so much detail and a rich use of language. Bear in mind,SIHPROMATUM is not a 'touristy' memoir: it's really about Little Savannah's interactions with her family, her transformation and theentire family's interactions with people of very different cultures than their own.

This memoir was fascinating on so many levels, I hardly know where to begin. To start with though, the concept of a single mother traveling across Russia, China and Mongolia for a year with two teenage daughters and a sometimes cranky, if brilliant son is amazing to me. The fact that they managed to do this without all-out war, is even more amazing. But aside from those two issues, the book takes the reader on a tour of these countries with great details and anecdotes, wonderful images, sights, sounds, scents; I feel like I’ve been there! Savannah Grace is terrific writer who through her journals has been able to share her experiences with the world in a way that will make countless people want to experience a journey like hers for themselves. What a gift this book is! And even better, there’s a sequel, “Backpacks and Bra Straps,” It’s sitting patiently in my Kindle queue, On with the journey! Thanks, Savannah for sharing your life with me!

From the title, the reader could assume this is a different kind of travel book, which it is, but not in the sense the title might suggest. It is the story of a family's travels (mother and three siblings) far removed from the tourist path. The chronicle is laced with humor and the difficulties of backpacking in Asia. The narrator is Savannah, who at the time of the travels was 14 years old, very reluctant to leave her comfortable, middle-class home. Eventually her unhappiness changes to a reality that this is a positive, life-changing, growing experience.Their backpacking experience is both the story of their travels through China and Mongolia -- with a short added section about Siberia -- and the life of the family itself. They are somewhat odd and dysfunctional but all grit and heart.Because of their limited budget, they had to avoid the tourist trail, frequently traveling much like the locals, enduring hardship and harsh conditions that brought them into the 'real' life, into the heart, of the countries. Because they interacted daily with mostly average people, the reader learns a lot about culture and customs -- the real deal.This is and intriguing adventure, well told, off-the-beaten-track. I love this enchanting memoir/travel book by Savannah Grace. She is 14 as the book begins in 2005, when her tranquil life in Vancouver, Canada takes an abrupt change. After her parents’ divorce, Savannah’s mother decides to sell everything to backpack through China and Mongolia for a year with Savannah and two of her three siblings: Bree, 17, and Ammon, 25. Savannah suffers the emotional trauma of leaving everything behind—friends, a comfortable lifestyle, her adored dog—for the unknown. Yet she comes to see this journey as sihpromatum, a blessing that initially appears as a curse. It is beautifully written, the authentic, tender story of a young teen blossoming with maturity beyond her years. Savannah has an enormous talent for storytelling. Her insights and observations are often wise, and at other times, comical, yet always believable for a young teen. We see the world unfold through Savannah’s young eyes, yet she also provides the historical, cultural and political perspectives of her older brother, Ammon. Savannah’s sense of scene is spot on, putting the reader right there beside her, seeing the sights, smelling, tasting, experiencing the strange and unusual, so different from what she and we are used to. Without judgment, she tries to understand the differences in cultures, to pare down to essentials, to the humanity we share. One of her anecdotes that I love, that reveals her inquisitive and compassionate nature, is when they travel to a remote school where their guide teaches. The local children have never seen westerners like Savannah and her family. She is timid at first then the whole family plunges in to have a true and joyous connection with the children that the reader feels. This is such a delightful book, with beautiful reminders to see the world with Savannah’s compassion and respect for others. Money, trappings of success do not matter: it is humans who matter and despite many cultural differences, we share the same longings, fears, dreams, and desire for understanding. Savannah doesn’t spare unsettling details. We fully feel her disgust at makeshift toilets, of unusual food, her long hours of painful travel, the blisters and sore muscles, the dirt and lack of showers, the incredible trials of traveling for long hours squished up against strangers. Yet there are also her achievements, of challenging herself to keep up with her family, and be a trouper. There are wonderful moments when she feels her part in the universe, and her love of her family, sibling annoyances and bickering aside. Savannah doesn’t change, all the elements are within her: her intelligence, wit, natural charm, innate kindness and compassion and the insight that can only come from one who has a good heart and solid morality and ethics from her family. At the end of this book, what lingers for Savannah is the generosity of strangers, the many people who helped her family along the way, the families who had welcomed them into their homes, “none of them expecting anything in return. I couldn’t forget their bountiful generosity despite their limited means.” I came away very much liking Savannah, seeing her goodness and warm spirit and knowing such beauty/goodness comes from a loving family. Her website and twitter account are great fun to read, keeping me up to date, even her meeting up with Baagii from Mongolia after ten years separation. I look forward to reading more by Savannah Grace.

This was a very confusing book due to the dates of rulers and their women. There seemed to be too much overlap. I would have appreciated more about the culture handed down to the Ottomans and the culture that survived after them. I did get a better view of the actions and problems of the ottomans in the Mediterranean and Western Europe during the times they were in power so I guess that is the most I could have expected.

Good introduction to the Ottoman Empire. I also read Suleiman the magnificent of the same series to enhance the experience. Well written and researched, entertaining while informative. One thing I like about this series is how much information is packed in a short book.

Like many other civilizations they start off in a tribal format, went to cities the on to a single main ruler (with others involved, of course) then on to an expansionist period and finally a gradual decline.There was a whole lot of brothers killing brothers to prevent them from getting to the throne. As with any culture there were both good rulers and bad rulers and even some horrific rulers.One thing that makes this different, though, is that there was the 'Sultanate of Women' where women ended up actually being the power. The book also points out how the harem was actually not the stereotype people have today.Another interesting point is that under Osman III Christians and Jews had to wear recognizable badges and clothes, predating the Nazi approach of the star the Jews had to wear, showing how history can repeat itself even in specific details.During WWI there were some 1.5 million Armenians killed by the government which establishes the Ottoman/Turkish empire right up there with governments that massacred people.The book is well done and is complete with maps, photos, and references.

Having never had a real curiosity for the Ottoman Empire, I found this guide by Captivating History to be informative and interesting! Learning the origins of the Empire and its people has been eye opening and I look forward to learning more.

Though not my usual interest in history, Captivating History does a great job at giving a lot of information and keeping the reader interested.

As you read the book you find that you did not know as much as you thought you did. It was an interesting read about the Ottoman Empire.

I have read almost all of this author's books. I found the use of the "f" word used continually both distracting and eventually offensive. When I read or hear this practice in movies/printed word I realize that the author lacks the words to express their thoughts in a more meaningful and varied format. I had not found this excessive use of profanity as an excuse describing feeling in this author's other works. I also did not enjoy the lack of an ending and closure for this story. No need to bait me to read the other books, if you have done a good job with the previous story. Sadly for the first time I will have to think about ordering any more of this author's books.

I loved this book, but then I love all the books in the series starting at the very beginning with " The Chosen" series and all the ones that came out of it. Vampires, dragons and all the other shifters. I impatiently wait for each new release and have never been disappointed!In this book, Storm is one of the water Dragon princes. He's bored so decided to take part in the next bride hunt even though he's not interested in mating a female. Jolene is the human he ends up capturing but she's not interested in him as she can tell he is a player. She is almost 35 and knows the clock is ticking. She's there to find a mate and start a family with a male that is wanting the same thing. She's nothing like the females he has been with and although he won't admit it, he has fallen for her, and she fell for him as well, but he still lets her leave at the end of the 3 week trial period. Thankfully Charlene's books have a HEA ending!!! I highly recommend any/all of Charlene's books.

Storm, arrogant prince that he is, just wants to have some fun for a few weeks. Choosing Jolene at the bridal hunt means that her one-time chance will be wasted on a commitment-phobe. Storm has some (rather painful) lessons to learn about what it takes to be ‘the best.’I love that Jolene takes a stand, doing her best to wait for love. It just doesn’t work out as she envisions!This book is delightful! The author takes many of the clichés we use regarding men, women, and sex to portray Storm and Jolene’s courtship. It’s fun, funny, poignant, and sweet as can be!

Finally, more dragons!!! I loved this first book in the Water Dragons series!! Storm and Jolene were so opposites of each other, but it was definitely true that opposites attract in this case! They were so on fire together. They couldn’t agree and were always fighting, but that just made the getting together that much sweeter. I am also wondering how the Water Dragons are going to get rid of their approaching problem. I really can’t wait for the next book, Captured Dragon, to come out!!

Amazing start to a new series! Love how she put a cocky dragon and he got his but laid with a girl who wasn’t taking any of his crap. Until he finally brings her to an agreement. Great book. Can’t wait for the others. I am certainly waiting on Flood story. Such a broody man.

Loved it! Storm a spoiled, egotistical prince learns a whole lot about himself as he pursues Jolene. And Jolene’s clock is ticking and she needs to learn how to lighten up. I really liked this story but I wish the ending would have been more complete.

Hot, cocky, and only out for some fun. Clock is ticking, looking for commitment, lost her sense of fun. Oil and water. Sometimes we find what we desperately need without knowing it's what we really want. Thank you Charlene for another great read!!

Omg I loved the series bride hunt but this spin off is funny emotional and just fantastic I was in love with storm and I love Jolene she wasn’t afraid to go after what she wanted and hold her ground I just couldn’t put it down fantastic

We've seen a goodly number of recent "biographies" of God, and this is an interesting addition to the genre. Those who read the book seeking confirmation or disconfirmation of their own faith won't find either of these here (except in a brief conclusion plugging pantheism): it's simply a history of the concept of God as it has developed over the millennia, all the way from ancient cave paintings to the present.The book has an enormous section of footnotes, and these should not be skipped, since in many ways they are more interesting than the text is. For each chapter, we get quite a thorough discussion of the various controversies and contradictory views: What was the purpose and meaning of cave art? Was Akhenaten really a monotheist? Etc., etc. Interesting and worth reading. But this is also what had me tearing my hair out! After reading the footnotes, it's clear, for example, that nobody really is sure what was going on with those cave paintings. But in the text, we find Aslan calmly asserting (with no real evidence) that the well-known Breuil drawing often called "The Sorceror" was intended as the earliest known representation of God. It's a case of "The large print giveth but the small print (well, the footnotes anyway) taketh away."Another example: where and when and why did Judaism become monotheistic and leave behind the henotheistic view that other gods might exist but were subordinate? ("No other gods BEFORE me") In some ways this is the central point of the book, since the origin of monotheism is probably the most significant development in God's biography. Well, we get a good discussion in the text and footnotes, but (spoiler alert!) at the end of this chapter he leaves all this scholarship behind (footnotes suddenly disappear) in favor of a speculative claim that this was due to the Babylonian captivity: Marduk's defeat of Yahweh gave rise to cognitive dissonance and made the Jews decide to go all the way and insist that Marduk didn't even exist. I think few will find this, or many of his other conclusions convincing. The book is worth reading and I learned a lot. But don't believe everything you read.

If you read Reza Aslan's book "Zealot," do not expect this book to be the same or even the same style. That is not a criticism but a credit to Reza's immense scholarship. God-a human history takes on a topic of massive scope and brings information together from many different disciplines and puts it in a readable format. Reza introduces the earliest evidences of humans relating to a god. For example, if describes a one inch feminine idol that was found in Israel that dated back about 300,000 years, which predates Homo sapiens. Very deep subject matters are covered such as whether or not the god concept developed in service of early beings or was it hard wired. Many early people and cultures are considered. It was interesting to note that the earliest communication on cave walls was done by women and that the same symbols were used in caves on opposite sides of the world. Reza Aslan shows the flow that ultimately developed into the major religions of today. Those are just some tidbits but there is much, much, more. It was a good read for me and it led my mind in many fascinating directions. Aslan's work isn't just conjecture but is well documented. He has 105 pages of notes that allow the reader to verify what he says and follow the research deeper into other directions if he or she so chooses.

I devoured this book in a day or two, I didn't want to put it down. Growing up Catholic, but leaving the church as an adolescent, and now a deep spiritual person without religion, I found this book to be just what I needed. Aslan writes in a way that speaks to theological academics as well as spiritual lay people like myself. This book gave me a lot to think about, questions to ponder, and relief to see in writing beliefs I have always carried, but didn't know the historical facts to back up.Upon finishing God, I bought and read Zealot, another one of Aslan's books.I look forward to reading his other books, and possibly even starting a book club with my community to start conversation about the nature of God.

More like a "personal" history, Azlan silences the critics who complained that "Zealot" wasn't footnoted sufficiently, but this will garner a whole new range of criticism for its primarily-Western "people of the book" approach to God, but it's really more how Azlan himself has sifted and sorted through his prodigious religious knowledge to come to an understanding of the unity of God. An an unbeliever, I appreciate his scholarship, his synthesis, and his knowledge of the West; I remain perplexed how someone who can parse the development of ideas and trace them back to their mythic sources can remain a believer in a Supreme Being. But that aside, he's a terrific writer and thinker. I liked "Zealot" even more because it was so focused on the development of how Jesus became central to Christianity, and how the actual human being (assuming that he actually lived, and that at least I believe) fit into his own Zeitgeist.
