The book is very well written. John Alite's humor definitely comes through, and at times, he had me in stitches. Although for the most part the book reads credibly, I think it needs to have balance. For instance, the story doesn't always come across as impartial. Junior always came out looking like a punk and Alite always came out the hero. Real life is not that way. Still, the book did confirm my suspicions about Junior - that he was an entitled, spoiled kid, who never earned his stripes in the street because he had a powerful name to back him up, and he grew up in the lap of luxury. His street cred (in my humble opinion) was non-existent. Also, about a month after I read the book, I ran into Alite. I had never met him before, but my impression of him is that he is sincere, warm, friendly, down to earth, funny and very sweet. I think he's a fantastic guy. I look forward to reading his next book.
Mr.Anastasia provides an in depth and harrowing tale of murder and mayhem within the ranks of the Gambino crime family in the 1980s and 1990s. It was style over substance, greed and violence over any romantic idea of honor. There is no honor in the life. Treachery and betrayal are around every corner. This isn't the Godfather movies..its real and its gritty and is despicable...
Most books written about the Gottis, and especially John Gotti, Sr., tend to read like fan-boy praise. True, a great many of the ones I have read hail from the days when John Gotti, Sr. was still eluding justice and being acquitted again and again thanks to a mix of clueless prosecutors, highly paid lawyers, witness intimidation and jury tampering. And though these books mostly made an attempt to document the crimes committed, they also dripped a grudging (or not so grudging) admiration for Gotti and his crew. After his conviction, the glow faded a bit and there were a few less laudatory books coming out.This one is definitely in a different tack. It shows all the warts and blemishes on Gotti, Sr., Gotti, Jr., their immediate family and the criminal clowns they hung out with. John Alite, who is the subject of the book and at one time in both Gotti's innermost circles, is a thug, a killer and arguably a sociopath. All that said, he does not seem to mind sharing every sordid detail and embarrassing fact. The book seems to be the first honest expose of the Gotti regime. Alite shows no remorse, and if you are looking for a tale of redemption, look elsewhere. The only regret shown looks to be in having been deluded about the Gottis for so long before realizing they weren't anything more nor less than petty hoodlums who'd somehow landed at the top of a criminal empire at its nadir. The Mafia is today a weakened organization, and what probably weakened it the most was the Gotti regime. Alite documents the final days of that empire very well.Today, Alite is a free man and not in hiding, despite having testified against the Gottis. He seems more ruthless than they are or were, so not sure who should be afraid of whom. Book well worth reading, if you have any interest at all in any of what I just wrote.
A pretty awesome insight into modern day mob life. The story was a little hard to follow sometimes because of how many people there were to learn and remember, and it bounced around a bit too. Sometimes he'd be talking about being with the Gotti family back in the 80's and then next he'd be talking about Gotti's in the 2000's. Very interesting read though and its definitely worth picking up if you have any interest in the mob (who doesnt??).
I have read other books by the author and really enjoyed his writings but this book is very repetitive and bounced around. I found or perceived the main subject John Alite to be unbelievable and somewhat narcissists .Not recommended save your time and money.
This is a great story, but terribly one sided. We know how bad they were! We know some did terrible things that they got away with. This is a book to read and get inside information about the mob. His story is haunting and eye opening, and most probably true as he lived it. A great insight into the inner workings of a criminal family. Be prepared to hear things directly from the one of the Soldiers!
I really like Mafia books, fiction and non-fiction and was hoping for a real insider's tale about the Gottis. Instead it was a series of stories of John Alite and his life as a mob enforcer. Other than the fact that John Gotti the younger was incompetent and egoistical the book was woefully short on insight into the Gottis. Wasn't the mob story I had hoped it would be.
If you like a good thriller and love suspense then you must read this book. I promise you will find it hard to put down. After following John Alite throughout the book and taking into account all his crimes, I find myself liking him and believe he would be an interesting person to sit down with and listen to his stories. Would not want to make him mad 😠though.
