Review

The Barnes & Noble Review: From Our EditorsThis is a passionate, deeply personal guide to digital photography by a true legend in the field. If you've been fortunate enough to participate in one of Stephen Johnson's seminars or to view his breathtaking national parks landscapes, you know his book has the potential to be truly extraordinary. And so it is.Johnson teaches sophisticated technique without ever losing track of art. You will learn powerfully important things about digital sensors and high dynamic range photography; about multi-exposure panoramas and scanning; about tone, layers, and Photoshop curves; about Camera RAW Workflow and honest restoration. He roots digital photography deeply in its historical context without ever losing sight of the present -- or the future. He also captures the deep importance of digital photography -- and its ethical implications -- without ever becoming pretentious. And the images? No words suffice. -Bill Camarda, from the November 2006 Read Only "Stephen Johnson on Digital Photography," by Stephen Johnson (O'Reilly, 2006, $40).This book provides a feast of photographs for anyone interested in capturing nature, or shooting excellent portraits. Johnson is an artist as well as a photographer and uses this book to help us (readers) develop our artistic eyes and photographic skills to produce photos that captivate viewers with intriguing images, careful design, and subtle colors. To help us learn the art and craft of digital photography, Johnson teaches digital "darkroom" techniques (using Adobe Photoshop) to transform images captured by the camera into prints that hold the viewer's attention.Rather than a basic how-to book, such as the Dummies and Missing Manual series, this one is for photographers ready to take the next steps in both artistic and technical aspects of digital photography.Seattle Times. I'm very glad to have found this book. It's inspiring in its discussion of photography on the most basic level -- not the techniques, but the motivating forces in photography's technological development and its potential for the future. I was also fascinated by Johnson's uncommon personal approach to the craft, and deeply impressed by his photos.Unfortunately, I also found the book needed a good deal of editing. First in content, because there was far too much that was just sketchy retreads of technical tips you can find in other books. It felt like padding. But worse were the scads of typos and other errors throughout the text. I honestly don't think this book was ever read carefully by any editor or proofreader. The photos are gorgeous, but the treatment of the text was amateurish. Certainly not what a book like this should merit.I hope this publisher will be ashamed enough of this product that it will issue a second edition with corrections. And to other reviewers I say, PLEASE stop accepting garbage editing in photography books! It seems to be almost a fashion!

If you're looking for a college text book on digital photography this one will do. I thought I was buying a good how-to reference book - WRONG. The book is very complicated with a lot design and theory that goes way over the top. The average person really doesn't need this kind of information unless your taking a college course on digitial photography and it's evolution. I attended a presentation by Steve Johnson at the July 2013 NECCC Conference and was quite impressed but his book is something else. Glad I only paid $10 (Amazon new-used listings) for it and not the $40 Steve wanted for it; plus the book was published in 2006 and it's now 2013.

Stephen Johnson has written an excellent book, appropriately titled, "On Digital Photography". It is not a how-to book. It is a book about where photography came from and how it developed to where we are in the digital age. The journey from analog to digital photography has been both slow and rapid. Johnson gives us pause, allows us to step back and get the lay of the land.Johnson's book helps you to appreciate the evolution of image capture and to understand our place in the history of photography. Although published in 2006, it's still relevant today. Highly recommended.

If you buy this book, hoping to learn useful tips from a pro, forget it. This book is more on Stephen Johnson, his work and contribution to the digital imagery era than it is on digital photography. Furthermore, this book is more on scanning back system than on digital photography with the average user tools (digital camera from Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc). What was the aim of the book? Other than putting the author under the lights, I cannot figure it out. There is nothing in this book that you can't read for free on the Internet. And all the explanations on taking photography and photo development/retouching on the computer are limited to basic. For example, Johnson says that an histogram is the best tool to analyse your image. How do you actually analyse an image with an histogram is barely said. And how do you improve your image using the histogram is almost limited at showing how to use the levels/curves dialog box in Photoshop... Could somebody be more basic than this?I am giving a 2 for the beautiful photos in the book, but if you wish to improve your photographer skills, this book does not worth the money. Buy something else.

'Stephen Johnson on Digital Photography' is an excellent book on the tools, techniques, science, history, and art of digital photography that will appeal to digital photographers of any skill level. Johnson is a genuine pioneer and evangelist in the field of digital photography. Drawing on over three decades of experience as an accomplished photographer, educator, and product consultant to the "Who's Whos" of the digital imaging industry, Johnson succinctly and eloquently imparts to the reader/student practical and interesting information on a variety of subjects. I found the coverage of digital camera techniques, color correction and editing, color management, and fine-art printing particularly useful. This information has truly helped me to make better photographs.'On Digital Photography' is a timeless and inspiring book that is thoughtfully organized, richly furnished with numerous beautiful and educational 5-color photographs, and superbly bound with quality paper and a resilient binding. It's manufactured to last, which is great, as I refer to it often.

This is a much needed book that actually explains at a reasonably technical level how digital photography developed and how it really works. It is written by someone who adopted this technology exclusively in 1994 and has contributed to its development in many ways.

Everything, past, present, and future, and then some on digital photography. This work deals with everything from the basics to what we will encounter in the future in the digital photo world. A great encylopedia offering more knowledge than I need. Well worth it.

I found the book to have a lot of information concerning digital photography. I had an opportunity to purchase last year for $40.00 and I'm glad I waityed and bought through Amazon. I saved big time!
