The Trim Healthy Mama Plan is a nutritional guide, healthy living book and meal planning advice book written by Pearl Barrett and Serene Allison. What first struck me about this book is that there is a lot of jargon. As in, the first 70 pages of the book explains all their jargon. That's quite a lot to take in and can seem overwhelming. However, it also explains the basis of the overall nutritional plan.Getting deeper into the book, the authors talk more about combining "satisfying" meals with "energizing" meals and then what they refer to as "fuel pulls" and "crossovers". There are not actually any recipes, but rather some lists of foods that you could choose from. On one hand, I think providing the list allows the reader to make their own choices, but it would also be nice to have some recipe ideas. There aren't really any in here. There is a special section for pregnant and nursing women, which I think could be helpful. They briefly mention issues like hormone problems and thyroid disorders, but don't go into detail about how this diet plan would affect those conditions.Overall, this seems like a really complicated way to try and plan out your dietary intake. Oh my goodness! I started Trim Healthy Mama, "way back when" - and have been following the principles laid out in the original book for 27 months. As a middle-aged (yes, I admit it) mama of four, with 3 decades spent overweight and then obese, having tried every "fad diet" out there; suffering hypothyroidism, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, and unable to even walk up a flight of stairs without wheezing... I was desperate, hopeless and utterly defeated. Skeptical, at very best, I purchased the original book and 'devoured" all 640 pages! WHEW!I didn't find it confusing, just followed the steps and... at 43 years old, I feel better than I did in my early 20's. I easily lost 53 pounds, and have been able to maintain my newfound health with ease - while eating absolutely delicious meals and NEVER feeling deprived! I can hike, cross-country with a 40+ pound pack, and not only live to tell about it... I FEEL GOOD! I could go on and on, but you want to hear about THIS book!Over the last couple years, I have spent countless (and I do mean COUNTLESS) hours on the THM facebook forums. Membership has literally exploded to well over 100,000 people, just in one group alone! Of these members, most enjoyed the original book... but many found the 600+ pages overwhelming - even though the book included 200 pages of recipes! Some members even had their books divided - to keep the recipe section separate from the "plan" part of the book.The authors heard and responded to the plea for a more concise version, with an easier layout... as well as for a completely separate recipe book! While I feel a "loyalty" to my original, exceptionally PRIZED copy of Trim Healthy Mama, I did order both new books. I AM SOOOO GLAD I DID!Just. WOW! They have completely outdone themselves here. Truly.The "Trim Healthy Mama Plan - the easy-does-it approach to vibrant health & a slim waistline" is absolutely amazing. This isn't just a "revision", this spells out the plan, while complimenting the previous book! The information contained here is definitely more concise, the layout is (in my opinion) much better; I can see this will be an easier read for many folks, and while it is more concise, it also contains updated information - making it my newest prize!I will say that I thought I would be replacing my original with this one and the new recipe book... but I could never give up the book that brought me "here". I have me a "collection"... Oh yeah!

My wife says:This book is a Life Changer! Photos are from left to right: 240, 190, 175, 160 and GoalI bought the first edition in February 2013, I was 230 pounds and only 5'2. I was desperate for change after 15 years (all of my teens, twenties and some thirties) being 115 pounds overweight. I had tried calorie counting, weight watchers, slim fast and diet pills. All of which had some weight loss but I gained all of it back every time.Trim Healthy Mama taught me *how* to eat for the first time! I no longer was worried that if I did take off all of the weight it would just come back on because right from the beginning they explained how to maintain your weight loss. I was so thankful to not have to calorie count for the rest of my life too!I initially lost 8-10 pounds per month, after the first 50 pounds I lost 4-5 pounds per month. I lost 90 pounds in 10 1/2 months. Then I became pregnant, had a healthy pregnancy with a 24 pound weight gain and gave birth to a perfect baby girl (all while continuing on the plan during and after pregnancy). I lost the baby weight in 4 months and then lost the additional 15 pounds I had left until I reached my goal. Then I maintained my weight loss for several months (nearly effortlessly) and became pregnant again. I just gave birth to my son (also wonderfully healthy) and had a 23 pound weight gain. I'm thankful to know that I will be able to lose it again and maintain!Trim Healthy Mama is more than hope, it's a life changer if you're ready!This is why I love Trim Healthy Mama in a nutshell: It's easy, it works, it's enjoyable long term and it's healthy! It's now been over 3 years and there's no turning back for me!I bought the new book at Christmas and have been reading it ever since. It so simply spells it all out. I was able to get through the basics of the plan in just 45 minutes, it was all laid out in the first few chapters! I love the meal and snack plans differentiated by specific circumstances. I love the information on superfoods and supplements. Many have been great additions to my diet and I never would have sought them out! Finally, the cookbook is wonderful. If it works for your finances it's a great addition too!I prayed for years for a solution to my weight problem. God answered that prayer with Trim Healthy Mama!

This charming little novel is considered a minor work by the Nobel Prize winning Columbian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Whatever its literary status, it's a worthwhile read. The frame of the story involves a ninety year old man who falls in love with a young prostitute, who's not really a prostitute. Within that framework, the author works in some wonderful insights into aging, love, friendship and death. The prose flows through the book like a quiet river on a summer day and provides the reader with a gentle reflective tale by one of the 20th century's greatest writers.

Gabriel García Márquez died last month so I looked for a book I hadn't read. "Memories" proved an excellent choice. His language is rich, voluptuous and humid as the Colombian jungle. His 90 year old narrator is fully alive and describes a world where teenage girls are facilitated into prostitution and an omnipresent government censor peers over the narrator's work at the newspaper—and makes it all appear totally natural.The physical book looks and feels like it came from a different era, a slim volume with a textured cover, off-white pages and archaic Janson typeface.And we English speakers should offer special thanks to Edith Grossman, García Márquez's superstar translator.

Márquez is a member of the upper echelon of serious writers; have you read many books better than 100 Years of Solitude? Nonetheless, sometimes you may not be up for a 200 character, 10 generation epic. No? This 115 page gem is like the Splenda version of Márquez, all the flavor, easier to handle.On the eve of his 90th birthday, a lifelong bachelor, utterly alone in the decaying house of his long dead parents, connected to the world only by the Sunday column he is still allowed to write for the local newspaper, feels the strong need for one more adventure; a wild night with a young virgin. After some trouble, it is arranged but presented with the peaceful sleep of the girl that has been carefully selected for him, he merely watches her and thus begins to grow the love that in his 90 years he has never known. Though his meager finances can barely afford it, the need to see her grows, as does his love for her, exponentially. Like a teenager in love for the first time, he can't sleep, loses weight, can only think of their next meeting when he'll be able so see her sleep, her body providing answers to the questions he thinks but doesn't vocalize. This impossible, but vital love affair sustains him for another year and through it the twists and turns of love makes him see what he never did; at the age of 90 he becomes a new man, love opening his eyes before they close forever.Some quotes:"I have never gone to bed with a woman I didn't pay, and the few who weren't in the profession I persuaded, by argument or by force, to take money even if they threw it in the trash. To me, this was a tale of two stories. In the first part the author demonstrates his in-depth knowledge of all things baseball. His knowledge of the statistical side of the game is off the charts - to the point of being overwhelming to the lay person. All of this is mixed together with experiences as a Wall Street trader and makes for an interesting read. It was at this point, after he has demonstrated his knowledge, that I hoped he would explain, IN DETAIL how converted his insights into cash by betting.This was where the book fell apart for me. Peta is reputed to have made a "fortune" betting on baseball, but we will have to take his word for it. (Given his work on Wall Street in the 90s, a "fortune" might be relative, however.) What I wanted to know were things like the following: who took his bets - Las Vegas casinos? A bookie? Off shore casinos? Other persons at work? How much did he actually bet? What kind of money management did he employ? What did his equity curve look like? Anyone who knew Peta was (or should have been) aware that he would certainly fit the description of "smart" or "sharp" money and this would have made getting bets down difficult, no matter where. To make a "fortune," you have to move a large amount of money around in some manner. You are allowed to do many things in a casino, but winning large amounts of money consistently, (especially betting on sports) is not among them. You'd be 86ed or have the amounts you could wager cut severely. Spreading his action around would have helped. In the end, I'm guessing he did something altogether different, but if he won a fortune, then someone on the other side of his bets lost a fortune. These things, among others, are the details I hoped to read about. Unfortunately, no specific details about how he made his money are forthcoming. If you are considering buying the book for this reason, don't. If you enjoy enjoy baseball, especially the "numbers" and strategy side of it, Trading Bases is an enjoyable read.

Don't go thinking you're going to read this book and make money betting on baseball. This guy had a lot of time on his hands, a Wall Street background, and a very firm grasp of Sabermetrics in order to develop his "model" that lead to his success. I wish I had been one of his friends that gave him money in 2011 because I got killed on betting on MLB last season (and I've been watching MLB for over 30 years, and I studied every starting pitcher every day). That being said, if you want to read about his story I found this a surprisingly good read. He's either a naturally decent writer or he had a ghost writer. Keep in mind, I love reading about Wall Street, so be prepared for that subject to come up often. I particularly enjoyed the NFL "over/under" for the season chapter. Not a crash course on Sabermetrics but some good introductory information (if you're not into Sabermetrics why are reading this book?). Good perspective if you do want to make some wagers. Good luck duplicated Joe Peta's model.

One of the best books I've read on predictive modeling is Steven Skiena's book Calculated Bets: Computers, Gambling, and Mathematical Modeling to Win (2001). In this book, Prof. Skiena describes a project he did with his students modeling the game of Jai Alai. Predictive modeling has been applied successfully in sports betting, so when I saw the book Trading Bases, I bought it. Unfortunately, the books dives deeply into the minutia of baseball, without providing much meat when it comes to describing the models that the author built to predict baseball out comes. I'm sure that for someone who is fascinated by baseball and baseball statistics, this book would have been more interesting. But for a practitioner of algorithmic modeling, this book struck out.

I bought Trading Bases on the recommendation of the smartest guy writing about baseball today, Joe Sheehan. My interest was in the author's application of modern sabermetrics to create an edge in baseball wagering. I was fascinated by this process, and very much enjoyed the author presenting the numbers in step-by-step detail (he shows his math). However, the parts of Trading Bases I found most interesting were the memoir chapters that describe the author's experience with Wall Street, from his college recruitment to his experience with the complete breakdown of a global banking giant, as well as his unique insight into what exactly went wrong, and why it wasn't properly fixed. Which presents interesting contrasts for the book - because the Wall Street chapters are so profound and deal with such a large, looming subject, the chapters about baseball, advanced metrics, and sports wagering can feel somewhat small and overshadowed. The author attaches deep personal meaning to baseball, and his overall process is detailed in the context of healing and recovery and professional transition, so it's not that these chapters don't have weight. But for the reader, you may be well into the book, looking for a little more Michael Lewis and a little less Nate Silver. I recommend the book, and will buy Joe Peta's next book, especially if it's more narrowly focused on the world of trading desks, hedge funds, and global finance.

I am a lifelong baseball fan, and I love to read. I also have a professional background in brokerage. This book was perfect as it addressed two interest areas of mine. I did not think it was reminiscent of Moneyball- there is as much shared about investment banking and foreshadowing of the financial crisis as there is about baseball. Great balance, well written, and a great gift idea for any baseball fan interested in Wall St.

I can't begin to say now awesome this book was, and how much I so needed to read such a story as this!! Everything I've gone through myself in my past relationships, I wasn't sure if the Lord could still write a love story for me. Now I know without a doubt, that He can and He will, thanks to Cheryl sharing her true story how God did just that for her! She allowed Him to take control, and the result was absolutely amazing and inspiring! Men, you also would do well to read this book, especially thanks to Chris, Cheryl's husband giving very sound advice on how to prayerfully pursue the right woman God wants you to have in your life. I myself am now excited to see what God does this coming year in my life...waiting on Him no longer will be a chore, but a privilege, and I know that the end results will be exactly the way God always wanted it to be for me. Read, pray, get inspired from Cheryl's story, and get ready to see what God will do in your life, as you wait on Him to write our your own love story!

i've only read 3 chapters so far and they were spot on. they were exactly my feelings in areas. they were not eye opening revelations. it's stuff i have heard/read before but she has lived it. a lot of people who teach on marriage and singleness are not p[over 35yrs old and still waiting for a spouse. she was funny and open and honest. i really loved the chapter that her husband wrote. but i started with Chapter Four: I Must Be Defective then i skipped to Ch. 17 his finally where her husband talks about his journey of waiting- must read ladies and gents, then i read the first chapter. i might up it to 5 starts after i finish reading it. but i was so encouraged by this book.i finished it and wow the pitfalls she endures. love her honesty. love her repeated statements to PRAY, PRAY, and PRAY.first pray to see if it's god's will for you to even be married. then pray to surrender to his will. then pray for guidance EVERY step o f the way, every relationship, every friendship,, .etc.basically unless you have a close relationship with God, pray a lot, and know the Word you can't mimic her journey.great book!

I have read a LOT of relationship books over the years and I have found the most comfort in those books written from a Christian perspective. Let's face it: because times have changed there are lots of women (and men!) who just can't seem to meet the right person. If you are a God-fearing, church going, sold-out for Christ, Bible-reading, Rosary-praying, no-sex-outside-of-marriage committed Christian (whew!) it ain't easy. It isn't IMPOSSIBLE but it isn't easy. I have intermittently given up over the years but then something pulls me back from the abyss. Oddly enough, I had just finished my quiet time with God when I went onto Amazon.com because I was thinking about getting another book--not a how-to book on dating or finding a man or anything like that. Rather, I was looking for a book about WAITING. After all, that's the season I'm in and have been in for a while. I was seriously considering purchasing two other books when this book showed up in my visual field. It was FREE and it had amazing reviews. Nuff said. I downloaded the book on Friday night. But Sunday afternoon, I was finished.What an amazingly true account of what it's like to be a single Christian woman who feels totally forgotten by everyone, even God on occasion. The author was extremely candid and shared her personal struggles. I could definitely relate to her dialogue with God. In the end, the author met the man God was preparing for her. The book ends with her husband sharing his *own* struggles as a single Christian man also in a prolonged waiting phase. He describes his emotional journery during their courtship and what God revealed to him along the way.I say this book changed my life because I believe this was a message from God to me. The author talks a lot about "signs" in the book. I don't expect much in the way of signs from God, but I do think He speaks to us in subtle ways. This book gave me a renewed sense of hope. No, there's no magic answer to this whole relationship thing, but I believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that God is involved in the process of who our spouse should be and if we "surrender the pen" as the author says countless times, God will write a beautiful love story. I don't know about you, but I'm a hopeless romantic and God is probably the biggest Romantic there ever was. I only wish I had a local group of Christian women to discuss this with because it is SO rich. So for anyone in a waiting season and struggling, check this book out and consider surrendering this area of your life. Yes, it is scary. And there's a little doubt in the back of your mind that it will ever really happen. Just keep speaking the Word over your barren situation and believe. Don't forget to thank God for what He's doing. Remember, when you sow a seed, a lot is happening under the surface that you can't see with your naked eye.

This book reads like a journal at parts, as well as your standard relationship book. It's comic and yet has deep spiritual truths and encouragement. It was written very authentically and I'm glad the author's willingness to share so much that was happening in her life while she wrote, was rewarded with being able to share such a detailed story of God's answer and provision in response to her prayers.I have a lot of books about relationships from various angles, topics and issues. Though the highly personal aspects does set it apart, I probably did not glean any information I didn't know before in some manner. What's different about this book is that it's really rare, in my experience, to have an author who will write directly and bravely out of the experience of being a Spirit-filled believer, i.e. one who knows that all the gifts of the Spirit are real and active today and embraces them. The written word of God in the bible is the foremost and main thing of course; but, as someone who has also experienced prophetic words, dreams, and other external confirmations through other believers, it was nice to see this reflected in a book. There are lots of us out there and it's nice to be able to relate.
