I only knew pirates, like most people, from the media. The media has changed over the years. We have had Defoe (aka Capt. Charles Johnson),Stevenson, Pyle, Wyeth, Flynn and Johnny Depp attempting to tell a story that long ago got lost in myth and folklore.This book is an excellent way to find the truth, such as it is, about the Golden Age Pirate. I had a blast reading it.I will not spoil any of the facts v wish it was true - you should take voyage yourself.The book is nicely written and flows smoothly. The book is well researched and scholarly, but can be enjoyed by readers at all levels of interest.My one takeaway that I will share is that if there was one rule with the Golden Age Pirates, it was "follow the money" - making a pirate voyage pay.Highly Recommend!!!

Curiosity got the better of me with this book. I wanted to know what kind of pirate myths the author planned to debunk. After all, I’ve been around long enough to have a halfway decent knowledge about pirates.Or so I thought. Benerson Little is a recognized expert on this subject, having published four books, written magazine articles, and appeared on television commenting on piracy. “The Golden Age of Piracy” is extremely well-researched, and contains more information than I expected.There are the stories one might expect, telling us all about Blackbeard or Captains Kidd or Morgan. There are many other captains and pirates he mentions, but more fascinating are the myths he exposes, “facts” I had grown up with and had embraced as true. I won’t spoil a good read by telling them to you, but some of the subjects include:Buried treasureWalking the plankPieces of eight, and what they were worth when making purchasesHow pirates fought, and the weapons they usedThose epic sea battles between two shipsAnd much more!Mr. Little entertains as well as explains, so this is not a dry read. When an answer is not clear, readers are provided with facts as the author attempts to lead us to a logical conclusion (such as the debate over why a pirate flag is called the “Jolly Roger,” as well as some of those other pirate sayings such as “Shiver me timbers!”).Anyone with an interest in history or the golden age of piracy (1655 – 1725) should take the opportunity to read this book. Wonderfully written, generously footnoted, and complete with an extensive bibliography, this book contains a wealth of knowledge and is also a lot of fun to read. Five stars.

Bought digitally. This book was written more like a giant essay. Part I was a little hard to follow without charts, diagrams, or timelines. I was getting confused with the pirates having multiple names. So I took a star off because I was wanted those added charts and images. I also wish I would have known that at the end of Part I that there were a bunch of pictures of pirate flags. Either I missed it mentioned in the text or it was never mentions. So I took another star off since it wasn't made obvious until the end of Part I. Part II was much easier to follow. Overall the book was easy to read for a common person, even though it was a little hard to follow in Part I.

Although I'm still plowing through Part I and at least one other reviewer has said Part II is better, I'm giving this book 2 stars based on what I've slogged through so far. As another reviewer has noted, it reads more like an essay. Yes, an essay assigned on writing a thousand words on what pirate flags may or may not have looked like with the simple conclusion that nobody knows for sure. ...or on what pirates wore which could have been this, that or whatever described in great detail but concluding that nobody knows for sure. This pedantic discourse drags on ad nauseum.If you're interested in interminable discourse on minute details about what pirates and their flags may, or may not, have looked like, by all means snap this book up now! If, like me, you're looking for a pleasurable read about the golden age of pirates, who they were and what they did, look elsewhere!

I learned a lot about pirates and piracy from reading this book and am glad I read it, but it really needed a good editor. The author is redundant in many places, adds unnecessary qualifications ALL the time. An editor could also have helped with the narrative flow that is all over the place.

Whatever you thought you lnew about pirates, Benerson Little will set you straight. His passion for the subject shows as he compares the characters we read about in novels or seen in the theater with the real people they portrayed. Though you may still enjoy your Pirates of the Caribbean movies you will find yourself shaking your head and smiling as the old salt cries "Arrr, shiver me timbers!..."

The author is thorough (sometimes getting a bit lost in detail), and writes well. He's obviously obsessed with pirates, and takes great care to point out what they were really like and contrast it with the popular image.For the popular image, he draws on sources ranging from Hollywood (lots of that) and Howard Pyle, to romanticized, exaggerated accounts that were contemporary with the pirates themselves, and reminiscent of the dime novels that glorified personalities in the American West.Worth reading, if you have any interest in pirates at all.

The book started with interesting ideas and was engrossing. Then stories blended together. Interesting characters were only touched on. By the end the book became exhausting. Needed an editor in the middle sections.

Cats, we learn, are not little furry humans. The author discusses the way cats gather information, how they interpret and use that information, and the way their emotions guide their actions. The science in these chapters is fascinating.The author goes on to examine the social life of cats--the connections they make with one another, and the science of cat "personality." The chapter on "Cats and Their People" is especially good. It discusses the human preference for "baby-faced animals," but points out that the physical appearance of cats cannot explain the affection humans have for them. Cats owe their success as pets, the author writes, because they are open to building relationships with humankind. The discussion of what cats feel for humans, and the analysis of purring, will warm the hearts of cat owners.The book closes with a look at the different pressures cats are under in today's world. The evolution of cats, the author argues, is moving away, rather than toward, better integration with human society.The book reveals that cats and dogs are more different than we might have imagined. And while this makes it a great resource for ardent cat lovers, it is far too complex and tedious for anyone else.If you love cats and truly want to know more facts about them that are based on years of advanced research, this is the reference tome for you. But if you want a light, easy book to find out more about our feline friends, keep looking.

I heard about this book on NPR's "Fresh Aire" program, and was intrigued by it enough to purchase it. The book is rather densely written, but not so academic that it can't bve read and appreciated by the 'average' reader, however, so much time is spent on the history of the domestication--or the ongoing attempt , -- that it can get rather bogged down. When the author gets to the whys and wherefores of modern cat ownership, the information is most welcome. he does allow for some "emotional/Personality" aspects of cat behavior, which is very welcome, as for some time, animal scientists strongly resisted (and, rightly so), the ascription of human thought processes and emotions to animals. But at times, that can go too far; some cat owners see their animals as miniature humans, which is absurd in another direction, but to have stripped them of any emotional motivations was also proving to be non-productive. Many behaviors are described, with some advice on dealing with less desirable behaviors, as a reader and cat owner I wish there had been more, though

It outlines the history of the domestic cat. But what can be summarized in 10 paragraphs or so is drawn out to several chapters and then repeated. As a cat lover and one who has many cats of my own, I did not find it particularly helpful. The writing style was dry and repetitive. The author also makes the assumption that cats are allowed to freely roam outdoors, a situation that is neither safe nor ideal in most urban cities.

An intelligently written book but in the end a bit dull. Some key pints are made (kittens should be socialized at 5-6 weeks, not the typical 8) and lots of literature reviewed, but as the author points out the studies are few, the conclusions controversial or open to multiple interpretations, and it is difficult to draw many conclusions. The most interesting discussion centers on the future of the pet cat in a world that is increasingly anti-cat (many groups, esp. Birders, are now actively anti-cat in the interest of conservation, though as always it is an oversimplification to conclude less cats= more birds). Instead of breeding for purity (e.g. Siamese, which like many pure breds are defective due to inbreeding), we should be breeding for the best human companions of the future, rather than just neutering our favorite cats and leaving evolution to the chance encounters between strays.

Bought this for husband who has become a cat man over the years. We appreciate the distinction between cats and dogs in the level of their domesticated behavior. Our daughter came home from college with a neutered feral male who is a source of constant entertainment, but who also gets our respect for his animal nature. Took over a month for him to come out from hiding, and he's still very discriminating about human contact-- which makes us feel honored to have his affections, such as they are. He sure is the hunter, frequently bringing home live mice. Having our consciousness raised about the impact cats are having on bird populations -- not nearly as detrimental as the human impact, but ... -- any future cats in our lives will be indoor cats, but this fellow will not be contained!

I love this book! It is so inspiring. It is my favourite, and I have lots. I have it as a coffee table book so I can enjoy it often. I have done mosaics for 5 yrs. but none in her style of using the entire plate as the design. I just use the rim. However, when I get a set of dishes with great designs in the middle as well as the edge I will make a table. Get this book - it is so beautiful!

Nice book for those of us who love to do mosaics. Sometimes I need just a little more help being creative. The projects are ones that you have been looking for the instructions for. The book has great photographs and lots of ideas on where to get your treasures to mosaic. I really look for classy things and different things to embelish with mosaics and this book gets to the meat of what you need to accomplish your project. Sometimes I have the ideas but I'm not quite sure what it will really look like before I start. This book gets you ready to enjoy the projects that you make. It also helps you to personalize that project you created to be a fine gift your friends and family will treasure.

Sorta like little old lady look. Several cleaver things to slap some plates on, but VERY repetitious.

This book is filled with stunning ideas and instructions. I bought it for the seashell section, and was thrilled that it was substantial. Highly recommended.

I love this book! It contains many gorgeous pique assiette (recycled broken china) projects, as well as some using seashells. Best of all, the projects are beautiful but not overwhelming (i.e., a beginner should be able to master them), and they shouldn't take anywhere near as much time or money as most projects would, yet you'd be proud to give or display them.

This book is very inspirational for those who have already done mosaics. It focuses more on the use of plates and seashells rather than stained glass and mosaic tiles. I really appreciated the author's informative text and pictures. I have read many of the mosaics books Amazon offers, and I keep coming back to this one for inspiration.Half of the book is dedicated to generous use of seashells, so those of us in land-locked states may not be able to play along.

I have yet to create a mosaic project but if I ever get around to it, this book will serve as my inspiration. The projects illustrated are beautiful, better than crafty, IMO, and gets your imagination going. I kept taking it out of the library every time I thought I might do a project with one of my many garage sale finds. Finally, I thought it was a book worth owning. So I bought it. Some day...

I'm very glad to have found this book. It's inspiring in its discussion of photography on the most basic level -- not the techniques, but the motivating forces in photography's technological development and its potential for the future. I was also fascinated by Johnson's uncommon personal approach to the craft, and deeply impressed by his photos.Unfortunately, I also found the book needed a good deal of editing. First in content, because there was far too much that was just sketchy retreads of technical tips you can find in other books. It felt like padding. But worse were the scads of typos and other errors throughout the text. I honestly don't think this book was ever read carefully by any editor or proofreader. The photos are gorgeous, but the treatment of the text was amateurish. Certainly not what a book like this should merit.I hope this publisher will be ashamed enough of this product that it will issue a second edition with corrections. And to other reviewers I say, PLEASE stop accepting garbage editing in photography books! It seems to be almost a fashion!

If you're looking for a college text book on digital photography this one will do. I thought I was buying a good how-to reference book - WRONG. The book is very complicated with a lot design and theory that goes way over the top. The average person really doesn't need this kind of information unless your taking a college course on digitial photography and it's evolution. I attended a presentation by Steve Johnson at the July 2013 NECCC Conference and was quite impressed but his book is something else. Glad I only paid $10 (Amazon new-used listings) for it and not the $40 Steve wanted for it; plus the book was published in 2006 and it's now 2013.

Stephen Johnson has written an excellent book, appropriately titled, "On Digital Photography". It is not a how-to book. It is a book about where photography came from and how it developed to where we are in the digital age. The journey from analog to digital photography has been both slow and rapid. Johnson gives us pause, allows us to step back and get the lay of the land.Johnson's book helps you to appreciate the evolution of image capture and to understand our place in the history of photography. Although published in 2006, it's still relevant today. Highly recommended.

If you buy this book, hoping to learn useful tips from a pro, forget it. This book is more on Stephen Johnson, his work and contribution to the digital imagery era than it is on digital photography. Furthermore, this book is more on scanning back system than on digital photography with the average user tools (digital camera from Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc). What was the aim of the book? Other than putting the author under the lights, I cannot figure it out. There is nothing in this book that you can't read for free on the Internet. And all the explanations on taking photography and photo development/retouching on the computer are limited to basic.For example, Johnson says that an histogram is the best tool to analyse your image. How do you actually analyse an image with an histogram is barely said. And how do you improve your image using the histogram is almost limited at showing how to use the levels/curves dialog box in Photoshop... Could somebody be more basic than this?I am giving a 2 for the beautiful photos in the book, but if you wish to improve your photographer skills, this book does not worth the money. Buy something else.

Wow. I was shocked at how small the pictures were. 1" high by 4.5" wide. This was a very very disappointing purchase.It clearly demonstrates why buying books on line can really be a problem.I sent in a suggestion to AMAZON to alert potential buyers that the pictures are so small and that there is only one picture every 2 pages.Dont waste your money until you have seen this at your local bookstore or in person.It is way over-rated here.

Gorgeous photographs that you need a microscope to examine. The total available area per page pair is 19 inches by 9 1/2 inches and most of the photos measure 1 inch by 4 inches. Excuse me?? I don't know and cannot imagine what the editor and publisher were thinking about. Lilliput maybe?? This is not a book of photographs, it is a book of glossy white pages. I bought it as a coffee table book and to share with my son when he gets older but I'm afraid I am going to return it as I can't afford to waste fifteen dollars.

This book was a waste of my money. As stated above, there is one pic for every 2 pages and it's 1 x 4.5 inches. The area is gorgeous and I'm sure the pictures are lovely, if you could see them well enough to get a sense of it. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY>

The desert is the essence of nothing, Courtney-Clarke writes in the introduction to Places in the Sand, her nostalgic photographic tribute to the Namib Desert. Far from embracing the nihilistic meaning that the word "nothing" normally denotes in our every-day language, the "nothing" of Places in the Sand is full of meaning and substance, of memory and life. Anyone who has spent serious time in the Namib Desert will know and recognize in an instant where the symbiosis of the nothingness of sand, wind and sun have forged this essence. Places in the Sun emerged from Courtney-Clarke's intimate knowledge of Namibia, the land of her birth, as well as her keen eye as a photographer and photojournalist. Places in the Sand is a memoir in form of "a visual journey through my (Courtney-Clarke's) place." This is also the title of the first photograph of the book and in a sense its dedication. It shows the sand-swept interior of a house in the desert long since abandoned to the ravages of time and place. But it also hints at life once lived here through the sky-blue, ochre and green colours of the fading paint on the crumbling walls and the open door against which the steady motion of the wind has lodged a tiny mountain of desert sand. It is hard to pick favourites among the 48 colour and 16 black-and-white illustrations. Sensuous dunes unfold, blown into form by the hot desert wind. Dreamlike roads lead nowhere and fragile cracked earth stretches endlessly toward the shimmering horizon. Earth touches sky in the far distance diffusing the point of their contact like in a Fata Morgana; and abandoned shelters engulfed by sand and time give back to the desert their vibrant structure inch by inch. The ghosts of the lives once lived in the Namib Desert, so it seems, are ever present. Beige, blue and the many shades of ochre are the predominant colours in Courtney-Clarke's desert photographs. Beige for the white bleached sand under the blazing sky which does not invite one to rest for long; blue for the infinite vastness of the Namibian sky which stretches to the end of the horizon and invites one to ruminate; and ochre for the sand's iron oxide pigments which have given the dunes their deeply rich hues. There are two black-and-white photographs of the famous Dune 45 on the way to Sossuvlei. The first is taken in the morning and the second in the afternoon light. What is brilliantly illuminated early in the day is transformed into a brooding shadow in the afternoon, giving the dune its distinctly architectural shape. In fact, many of the photographs seem like architectural compositions. Most of the landscapes, taken on the ground, are presented as small, oblong boxes, approx. 11 x 3 cm in size. This gives the photograph and its subject a distinct contour but also adds depth on the square page which measures approx. 22 x 22 cm. For example, Star Dune of the Namib moves the star point of the dune to the far right of the photograph and thereby arranging sharp fields of light and shadow like a tipsy star fruit. The huge pointed finger of one face of the dune in Seven-year drought almost seems to take off from the parched earth like the slender tail of the Concorde precipitously alighting from an airfield into the sky. Courtney-Clarke's dunes also reveal distinct patterns if seen from above. Sand in flight shows several dunes in various stages of formation, straining to grow taller and wider and trailing their wispy tails like the dyes in a silk Ikat fabric from Central Asia. Perhaps inadvertently, Places in the Sand also contains poignant ecological messages. The tracks in Going somewhere are those of a car navigated most likely in an area not under nature conservation protection. In more delicate desert areas these tracks could last for hundreds of years and if carelessly imposed could destroy fragile desert environments for ever. I have driven on the Long Road to Solitaire in the blazing sun, for ever aware that a breakdown of my bakkie could amount to more than just an annoying inconvenience. There have been more years of drought than of rain in Namibia's recent history, and the cycle in favour of drought seems to be lengthening with every turn.Thus numerous photographs record stumped or fallen skeleton trees, some still desperately straining for life in the barren sand; or of the odd piece of farm equipment that has long ago ceased to be useful. After such an abundant display of desolation one's eye nearly jumps with relief onto the page with the small photograph entitled After the rain. Almost rendered like a primitive painting, this is one of the most joyful in the book. The blades of green grass behind the wire fence stand upright, the mountains hover serenely in the distance and the brilliant blue sky seems infinitely benign. Anyone who has been to Kolmanskop or to the ghost towns in Diamond Area 1 south of Luderitz is intrigued by how wind and sand have conspired to transform, for example, the Mine manager's residence and even Courtney-Clarke's childhood home, Liebig House, on the farm Neu-Heusis at the edge of the Namib Desert (Memories of Neu-Heusis) into testimonies of the past. However stunning the photographs, Places in the Sand is ultimately about Courtney-Clarke's memories of early years spent in Namibia, on its expansive farmlands and in her beloved desert, near the cool shore of the Atlantic and along the desolate Skeleton Coast to the north...

This edition is all right - reasonable level of annotation (most students would benefit from more), justifiable selection, fair show of critical essays; but it's a comedown from the 2nd ed. in every respect, or so it seems to me. The selection from "The Faerie Queene" cuts out Scudamour's relation of his experience in the mysterious Temple of Venus: absolutely essential for anyone reading Book III, which is printed entire in both eds. The pseudo-personal "Colin Clouts Come Home Againe" is a thin substitute, whatever its indications of "the teasing ambiguities of the patronage system" so dear to critics of the 1990s. With the new emphasis on politics rather than philosophy, the "Fowre Hymnes" have gone too; the editors are clearly aiming to reflect "recent critical attention" (their words), but the result somehow suggests that Spenser has become more predictable, less intellectually exciting, over the 10 years between the two editions (1982-1993). As for the choice of critical essays, some things have not been changed when they should have been (the tiny snippet on allegory from "The Kindly Flame" is far too brief to be helpful); on the other hand, the excision of C.S. Lewis's account of the House of Busyrane is simply perverse. Lewis is the critical starting point for this, and later work depends (whatever its attitude) on him.Obviously a new edition must struggle over the demands of space, but it must also keep in mind the nature of its readership. Who will use this? Not a professional Renaissance scholar, who will own a complete text. So, students, or interested readers, who don't already own the previous edition, and have not necessarily internalized a long tradition of Spenser scholarship. This imposes a serious responsibility on the editors to choose not just fashionably but judiciously. And to limit the bibliography to work published since 1972 (just over 20 years!) is not just injudicious but absurd. (The list for "Epithalamion" does not list Kent Hieatt's seminal study of its structure, to give just one egregious example.) Also, of course, this procedure limits the work's own reach into the future. This bibliography already looks out of date, as one with a broader chronology would not. The same goes for other elements, too: the editors of a fourth edition, on a similarly limited plan, would probably want less on power and more on gender - and thus, with luck, might reintroduce the Temple of Venus, dropped here.Meanwhile, for the decisions here outlined, so damaging to the lasting value of the book, these editors deserve three stars.

All of the added notations makes scholarship in Spenser a much easier task than it probably was 50 years ago.

Contains an easy-to-read translated version of the Faerie Queene, one of the most notoriously hard to read pieces of literature on this planet. This is truly a collection of Spenser's finest.

My youngest daughter - in college - seems very well pleased with this selection... like the professor gave her a choice, right?

There is plenty to like in Jay Gertzman's book, Pulp According to David Goodis and he backs up his research two fisted styled with anecdotes about the author and his life in Philadelphia, where many of his novels are set. Populated with grim losers, has been prize fighters, rummies and bar flies, Goodis examined the dark side of the street up close and personal. Even after finding some success in Hollywood as a screenwriter and a successful novelist, Goodis returned back to Philly to live with his aging parents and his schizoid brother, mining a vein of pulp narratives for fool's gold. If you aren't aware of Goodis and his wonderful edgy novels, now is the time to find out what all the fuss is about. Gertzman knows his subject in depth and it is reflected in this book; I highly recommend this walk on the wild side and encourage all crime readers to start hunting for those excellent Black Lizard reprints of Goodis' work. There never was another writer like Goodis and he is overdue for his time in the spotlight. Grab on hard with both hands and take a good long stare into the abyss that is life with Goodis as your tour guide.

This is the only book to read on Goodis, a classic study that makes all predecessors superfluous, Gertzman has written the break through seminal classic on a tricky and complex but crucial Noir author. Gertzman has carried out a thorough and meticulous body of research into Goodis, exploring in depth his literary relevance within the wider ongoing Noir canon, his tropes, and their ongoing importance within Amercian culture, his relationship to other authors (Thompson included) who occupy similar terrain, and research into Goodis the man himself, fascinating, brilliant.

American artistic accomplishment can be found in seemingly unlikely places. At the time of his death, David Goodis (1917 -- 1967) and his paperback original pulp fiction had been virtually forgotten. Gradually, some readers developed an interest in Goodis. In 1997, the Library of America included his novel "Down There" in a volume of 1950's noir fiction. In 2012, the LOA published a volume devoted to Goodis, including five additional novels. These two volumes helped me and many other readers discover Goodis. I went on to purchase and read some of Goodis' additional novels that were available and relatively accessible. I read Philip Garnier's own English translation of his biography: "Goodis: A Life in Black and White" (2013) and watched the film adaptations that I could find of Goodis' writings. I loved this author that I had only recently discovered.I was glad to find this outstanding new critical study of Goodis, "Pulp According to David Goodis" by Jay Gertzman, Professor Emeritus of English at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. Gertzman specializes in American publishing history and is an authority on Goodis: with our shared interest, he and I became acquainted through several online sites. Gertzman kindly sent me a review copy of his book.Born in Philadelphia, Goodis worked as a Hollywood screen writer and wrote several novels before returning to Philadelphia where he lived in his parents' home for the rest of his life. In Philadelphia, Goodis wrote the series of "paperback originals" or pulp fiction for which he is best--known today. Gertzman's book delves deeply into Goodis' life and writings with an emphasis on several of the books he wrote upon his return to Philadelphia with their lyrically dark exploration of Philadelphia's lower-class neighborhoods and their inhabitants.Gertzman places Goodis and pulp writing within the context of American literature. Goodis and other pulp writers once were not taken seriously, a situation that has fortunately changed. Gertzman distinguishes between American "authors" who wrote serious, thoughtful books for demanding readers and American "writers" who wrote to be popular and to entertain. Goodis self-described himself as in the latter category. With the market for throwaway pulp paperbacks that sold for about a quarter, Goodis and his publishers aimed to reach a large market. Gertzman develops six characteristics of the genre crime, noir novels Goodis wrote which were designed to appeal to readers seeking a titillating read through identifiable characters and situations. If that were all there was to Goodis, he would not deserve the attention he has received. Gertzman shows how Goodis took the conventions in which he worked and developed them with originality and feeling based largely on his own creativity and experiences. The distinction between "author" and "writer" or between "serious" literature and "trash" ultimately becomes blurred and in the case of a gifted author such as Goodis seriously misleading.In his study, Gertzman combines analysis of Goodis' novels with analysis of the work of Freud and Kafka, among others. He offers a history of Philadelphia in the years after WW II as it became the setting of much of Goodis' writing. Gertzman discusses the themes that pervade Goodis' fiction, including poverty, fate, the failed search for intimacy, conflicts in recognizing and fulfilling one's sexual needs, entrapment in a destructive way of life, loneliness, and ultimately, the possibility of a redeemed life in the middle of failure. The Goodis hero as a "noble loser" and the characterization of Goodis' writing as "doomed romanticism" are themes that run through this study. Gertzman sometimes takes a novel and offers a sustained, close reading. In other instances, he examines a work of Goodis, sometimes more than once, based upon a variety of themes the work presents.With the LOA volumes and other works that are reasonably accessible, some of Goodis is still difficult to find. Some of Gertzman's most detailed analyses are of works that I and most readers probably still have been unable to find and read. Thus, in his opening chapter, Gertzman offers a detailed reading of Goodis' 1952 paperback original "Street of the Lost" and shows how this work in many ways captures the themes of Goodis' output in its own inimitable way. I enjoyed learning about what seems to be a fascinating, violent book and am sorry that it is not in print or easily accessible.In his final chapter, Gertzman offers another detailed analysis of Goodis' final novel "Somebody's Done For" (1967). This again is one of Goodis' less accessible titles. Readers of Goodis have mixed responses to this late title, with some disliking the book and others finding it a masterpiece in its way. Gertzman is of the latter opinion and discusses the book convincingly and well, concluding that it is a "tragedy of the common man". I learned a great deal about Goodis from Gertzman's discussion of "Somebody's Done For" and would love to have the opportunity to read the novel itself.Gertzman also offers thematically-oriented discussions of Goodis novels I have read, centering upon their Philadelphia locations, including "Cassidy's Girl" "The Moon in the Gutter", "Street of No Return" the "Blonde on the Street Corner" and, of course "Down There" (which became a famous movie, "Shoot the Piano Player") His discussions of these books are wonderfully evocative. He discusses "Of Tender Sin", a book I have read, which explores themes of incest as it wanders through Philadelphia's mean streets. Gertzman also offers a perceptive reading of "The Burglar", a work with a discussion of the nature of loyalty and morality which also became a film with Jayne Mansfield as a major character. This is a work of Goodis which has long fascinated me and which is readily accessible in the LOA volume.Gertzman devotes a chapter of his study to a discussion of Kafka and to parallels between Kafka and Goodis. He uses Kafka with insight at several points in his study. While the discussion of Kafka is illuminating, I found that this study works best when it focuses on Goodis' own books and on his life and on the settings of his writings.I became absorbed and Gertzman's study and wanted to think about Goodis again, to reread the works I know and to read some of his books for the first time. The book helped me understand why I was so taken with Goodis when I found him. He may not be for every reader. Those who love Goodis and who are interested in noir and pulp fiction will learn a great deal from Jay Gertzman's study.Robin Friedman
